5 1/2 INCH CROWN" OR 6 INCH CROWN"?

Post by Richard~Buxton »

Hi guys,

Just wondering what height you have your crown 5 1/2 inch are 6 inch. The 5 1/2 seems the most common size, I've just ordered
my AB from Steve, if it's left up to him he does them 5 1/2 inch. as he believes that is what was seen on screen, and I do agree with him.

I've been studying the Raiders fedora pics and if you count 1 1/2 inch for the ribbon it looks dead on 4 inch, What does everyone else think.?

hat

Steve did my hat at 5 3/4.We wen't with it a little taller because the top of my head would touch the top of my other fedora's. I would talk with steve some more and trust his judgement.

It really depends on how wide/long your face is. You can only make assumptions on the screen hat based off of Harrison Ford's head shape compared to the crown height he had. You want to match your hat to your fave, not Ford's, right?

Send him a pic of your mellon, side and back.

But trust me when I say this... if you're going to go authentic - 1930's you gotta go tall.

Well, my old Peters Bros. hat had a 6" crown, and my Adventurebilt came with a 5.5" crown, and I honestly liked the look of the 5.5" crown on my head. What the rest say is true, though. The size of your crown should be at least somewhat proportionate to the shape of your head. Something that looks good on Harrison Ford may not really look good on you. Sending Fedora a pic of your head, front and side, will most likely help him gauge what size crown you'd like. When ordering my Adventurebilt, I leave the details up to him, and he always comes through. :D

Well i'ts probably to late to make changes anyway, My
AB as been ordered around a week now. I went with the 5 5 inch, has that was Steve's recommendation for the authentic size, I will trust His judgment on this as I think I've made the right choice. I mean i'ts only 1/2 an inch deference. As long as it suits me that is the main thing right.? I should have sent him a pic of my head though.

Just curious though will the Fed shrink over time.? I went with the Beaver. 8)

give him a call (or drop a E-mail )you might still have time. I changed something on my fedora and it was no problem at all. It can't hurt to try.

Is the crown measured before or after the bash? My Fed Deluxe seems to measure 5" bashed...

I prefer it a bit higher.

Do fedora's tend to shrink when weathered? Good question, when talking to a HJ representative I was told the opposite actually happens with regular wear the hat will actually spread a bit from use; however, who knows if it gets wet. The fit should feel snug but if you feel a dull throbbing in any part of your head from wearing it for a time chances are it may be too snug. It can be stretched at a hat shop one or two sizes. David

My limited experience with fedoras tells me they do shrink when you are not wearing them. For example, if you get it wet and then just put it in your closet it will probably shrink a bit, but the more you wear it the more it will stretch to the size of your head. Abner

Another thing to consider would be investing in a good hat stretcher should the hat ever become soaking wet, or you plan to store it for any length of time. David Morgan of Indy whip fame has a very good one in their catalog for about $17 if my memory serves me correctly. Any yes, all GOOD felts will shrink if they are dried to quickly, or with a heat source. If allowed to dry at normal room temperature there should be little if any problem. I haven't had any drastic changes in mine to date, but I do recommend the stretcher for storage use. Michaelson

Thanks for clearing that up Wayne.

Well I will email my head to Steve, and see what he thinks, the 5.5" crown will probably be fine though, that is still in it's self a tall crown.

 You'd be the first one to do that and survive. :D

Good question though. I've always wondered that also. I just ordered mine too and I'm tempted to change it, but if Steve says 5.5 is screen accurate, thats good enough for me.

I believe that crowns from 5.5 all the way to 6 appear to be in different scenes. Fedora says that anything in that range will stick to 'screen/Indy accurate', so the question is to your personal choice and preference. Due to the shape of my dome I went with the 5.5, which Fedora was in agreement with. I believe his standard is 5 3/4.

Ultimately, however, half an inch is like... what... 1.25cm?

It's not much.

Don't worry, the 5.5" crown will be just fine. Thats what mine has. I think it looks better on me than my Dad's Fed with a 6" crown. IMO the 5.5" is perfect; tall, but not too tall. :D
