The fit of Ford's fedora: an observation

Post by Shawnkara »

First, I have to say it's great to see the board back up and running. I was about to enroll in a twelve-step program.
Anyway, it's been mentioned from time to time how the fit of an Indy fedora and the manner in which it's worn has a dramatic effect on the overall look. It's been mentioned that Ford seemed to wear his fedora rather high on his head. I don't know if this matters to anyone but I thought I'd throw it out there in "FYI" capacity. Through the process of the studying Ford's face/head for the various sculpts I've done in various scales I've noticed something. Now, typically a fedora (most hats for that matter) is worn right down to the tops of your ears. I've realized that Ford's ears sit higher than most peoples'. If you view a photo in profile you'll see that the bottom edge of his earlobe is level with his nostrils. My earlobes, in comparrison, are level with my lips. Ford also has pretty big ears. Combine the fact that his ears sit high with the fact that his ears are big and extend upward pretty far and there you go; the reason his hat sat so high on his head. There's a bit of inane trivia for the old archives.

Whatayaknow!! I think your right. The tops of his ears are a bit above a line to his eyebrows so that hat rides higher. I never thought of that. Your gonna have everyone checking where their ears are. Great observation!

Wow, I never thought of it from that angle. I guess that's going to make all the difference for most people for achieving the 'look'

Elf, Vulcan, same thing I thought. When the elves left to go to the Grey Havens, didn't they go off course and end up on the uninhabited planet of Vulcan?

I also heard a theory that Ford's ears were turned 180°.

I always kind of wonderd about it in a dim way, but never did any research, untill I saw this post. I just got out my high school year book and compared top of ear heights. They seem to range from the upper eyelid to the top of the eyebrow. Almost an inch variance! Ford's are at the top of his eyebrows or a little higher. I always thought if my hat was almost touching my ears, I had it about right. From now on, my hat will be worn a bit higher, and I can go with a slightly lower crown height. Thanks Shawnkara! An important observation you have made.

Since the first pic is taken at about chin level, I'd estimate the tops of you ears are in the Harrison Ford ball park.

My akubra got tighter after sweating into it for a long time and taking it on airplane trips. It sits really high on my head now, compared to when I first bought it and it was sliding down onto my ears.

I think your ears are very very different from Ford's, though you have your own look.
