Flightsuit, interesting conversation with CS

Post by guitone »

I called flightsuit to ask about their expedition jacket and although it is expensive I felt like I got good information from CS. For instance, the first thing said was the goat will wear better, maybe not look as luxurious but..., also that the jackets come in Short, Regular and Long sizes, which makes sleeves and body length a bit easier to get right. For me, my chest measures a 38 and waist is a 34, so their sizes are right. My shirt sleeve is a 32, there regular is a 32 1/2, but they are getting me both measurement for shorts as well as swatches of both materials in black and brown. They did say they do not expect great aging from these skins, so what you get is what you get, and unless you intend on aging them yourself you live with what you get, so seeing swatches will be good. Since I don't need to rush this looks like a good excersize to see if this jacket may be what I am looking for after all. Since I wear a short in a suit and by the time you get the wested the pricing with shipping is not that different, and these from what I have heard will be more durable, well, they are looking pretty good at the moment.

Hmm. :-k The part about the ageing is kind of interesting. I would think that each hide would generally age the same, just at different rates. Whether is a lamb, goat or cow, their all going to wear at the stress points, i.e. cuffs, seams , etc.

I don't know about the price though. It looks like there is about a $100 difference in price.

I mistated, all would age naturally, but for me the sizing seems easier and at $400 it may be a safer bet. By the time I get a wested in the states it is pretty close to $400, but since I don't have to rush I can investigate more.

Getting the right specs for a Wesyed can seem daunting, but its really not that bad. When I ordered mine I gave them my height, chest, and sleeve. I left the rest to them and everything came out perfect. So don't be scared away from Wested by the measurements. Of course, the Flightsuits is also a fine jacket from what I've seen. I don't know how much the price has changed but I payed $309 for my Wested last August.

I know it's late, but I feel slow as I can't figure out what "CS" stands for in your post.

Same here, when I had ordered from them back in November 04', they had excellent customer service. The goatskin is incredibly soft and supple, yet everything you'd come to expect from goatskin leather. Also, that's ironic that you just mentioned that they can "age" nicely...It looks as if the sleeves on my Expedition is distressing "very slightly" ....

Kind Regards,

I've had my goatskin Expo for almost a year now. It has a 40R body and 40S sleeves and fits great. It has become quite supple, but does not show any aging of the leather. The goatskin appears to be very tough.

Does anyone have both a goat and lamb Expo that they can give a comparison on? I'm curious if the lamb is different enough from the goat to make it worth obtaining. I'm most interested in comments on draping, feel of the leather, visual appearance, and warmth.
