Hat handling, day to day

How do you fellers and ladies handle your fedoras? I always heard you weren't supposed to grasp a hat by the pinch/crown and you're to only use the brim to handle it. I'd finally started doing that and here I see Bink blatantly disregarding that practice. What's a fella to do?!

How do you guys doff and don your hats?

I give to many options, don't I? You're paralyzed with indecision, aren't you?

Please explain WHY you chose the answer/practice you did.

I didn't answer any of the above, Snakewhip, because I'm inconsistent, like a TRUE scoundrel! Sometimes I pick it up by the pinch and sometimes by the brim. If I do pick it up by the pinch, it's very gingerly. I don't squeeze the daylights out of my hats. I respect all of my hats and wear hats daily. (There's one on my head right now.) I have yet to put a hole in a good hat by picking it up by the pinch, but again, I'm not malicious to the hat when I do so. Even so, Indy's hat was PLENTY abused. So for the true "Indy" look, you SHOULD pick it up by the pinch!

It also depends upon the hat. If it is a very fragile and delicate fedora, then I'll pick it up by the brim. I usually try to use the brim method, but it doesn't always happen that way.

I only use the brim. I've ruined two hats in the past with the crown pinch, as the felt has actually cracked after a lot of putting on and taking off when pinching the front of the crown in the procedure. That's just MY experience, though. Regards. Michaelson

OK. I'm the Scoundrel! Someone has to be (beside bink!). I grab it by the pinch all of the time, every time! Now I don't pinch it; I creadle it with my hand around the pinch area and I pop it on my noggin'.

It is true that I once split a panama hat by doing just that. I really don't think I am going to have a problem with my Adventurebilt! And, if I do, I will put together that Jed Clampett outfit I have always wanted and I'll buy another one.

Humm, you are supposed to pick it up by the brim, (is that where the sweat band is) , i always pick it up by the top (is that the pinch?)

I would appreciate answers to my () cuz i have probs translating those words

The pinch is the top/front of the hat.

The brim is the round section of hat between the edge and the sweatband. You have the correct translation for crown/pinch. That is the top, or the front of the top. Regards. Michaelson

The brim and the crown are all made from one piece, so no, you will not tear it off by this practice. Regards. Michaelson

Every hat FAQ I've seen says you're to pick up hats by the brim. I never did til recently. I just wanna find out how many people do what. No judging.

By the pinch, cause it looks cool. Just got used to handling it that way. I own a PB custom and it's one tough lid.

It just depends on my mood.I chose by the brim but then I choose to pick it up by the pinch at times.Oh boy I hope I dont choose poorly & shrievel up & get blown away like Donavin,in LC.

I pick it up by the brim. I used to pick it up by the pinch, then I got the living daylights scared out of me by stories from people with experiences like Michaelson...although a Jed Clampett hat would be nice...Weeeeeell dogies!

I usually put my hat on buy the brim. But I find if the hat needs adjusting I usually grab it by the pinch and move it around. Am I a scoundrel in training?

Seriously though, it is one thing to handle your hat by the pinch and to repeatedly crease it by the pinch. I am sure creasing the pinch would lead to the tearing we have been warned about.

I've heard picking a hat up by the pinch can cause taper. I pick it up and take it off by the pinch A LOT. Almost every time, mostly. All that's happened to my adventurebilt by doing this was it caused some light discoloration at the apex of the pinch, and some little black spots appeared. I don't have any 240 grit paper, so I don't know how to take care of it, really.

You can't pick a hat up by the pinch without applying some pressure. With a tight pinch, as on the Raiders hat, if you pick it up by the pinch, you are living dangerously. It is only a matter of time until it cracks.

When you want to tear a piece of paper, you bend it back and forth a couple of times, and it will tear effortlessly and in a perfectly straight line. When you pick up a hat by the pinch, the felt flexes a little bit from the pressure you applied. It will take more than a couple of times of picking up your hat by the pinch, but you are flexing that felt each time you apply the pressure to pick it up. Eventually, the felt of your hat will do the same thing as that piece of paper. It's your money, pick up your hat however you want to.

I wonder how Indy handled his hats? I have a feeling he did it both ways. Sometimes, I handle my hats the way I should, other times I'm a scoundrel.

He sure does. He also always places it brim side down on tables. I stand mine on the crown, brim up. Boy, ONE of us is 'wrong'. I'm sure Ford cares too, don't you?

Okay, ever since Snakewhip got his fedora in a bunch, I've been keeping track of how I pick up my hats. From whatever resting position it's in, I pick it up by the brim. However, in the process I do sometimes turn it over and cradle it by the pinch (while not actually pinching it) and then raising it to fall onto my head. If I shift it around on my head after, it's usually by the brim. I almost exclusively remove my hats by the brim. But I do rest my hats on tables or dressers on the brim, with the front hanging over the edge. Only when it gets wet do I usually sit it on its crown.

I put on and remove my hat by the brim. Just never got in the habit of handling it by the pinch/crown. My pinch is very tight, so I never touch it unless I have to.

I always hold it by the brim- I see that as the exception to the rule- as in movies it seems they always handle their hats by the pinch. I've only noticed since hanging out with you lot.

I get funny when people handle my hat by the pinch. They just don't understand dang it! :evil: Someone just needs to slap Indy when he handles his hat the wrong way.

Recently I've been either hanging my hat on a hook when at my place or laying it upside down on a flat surface- again I only picked this up from you crazy folk!

It all seems to make little sense anyway- as I sit it and kick it around the place. So maybe I've gone mad with a love/hate hat relationship.

When it comes to setting my hat down, I used to put it brim up, but I just found that it doesn't look Indy-ish. So now I put it brim down on the table, with the front of the brim hanging off the side. :junior: -IJ

Indy picked his hat up the way he did for style points, or he may have not even given it any thought. He had a movie studio with an almost endless supply of money to buy him another one if he messed his up. I, unfortunately, don't have that luxury.
