Non Indy fedora

Post by Fedora »

I just made this non Indy fedora for a guy. He sent a pic of a hat that was worn by Alan Ladd in an old movie and this is the outcome. http://public.fotki.com/Fedora/hats/nonindy2.html

To keep this Indy related, it sort of looks like the guy wielding the Thompson in the Raven Bar scene. Only, his was black. But, I have not checked to see for sure, since I never liked non Indy fedoras anyways. The hat pictured here has a 5 inch crown at the tallest point on the sides. Front 4 1/2, back 4 1/4, with a 2 5/8 brim. Since this is my first non Indy fedora, I am very nervous about this hat. regards, Fedora

Fedora,
I think it looks great -very classy. I would wear a hat like that with one of my suits to work. I'm sure the guy will be pleased. :D
I know I would be!
Best,

I know who you're referring to, Steve! I am working on getting him a screengrab right now from the Ladd film noir, "This Gun For Hire." I believe that's the hat Ladd wore from that film.

TOUCHDOWN AND SCORE on that lid, Steve!

Very interesting. This new hat looks EXACTLY the way I ended up up shaping my Adventurebilt. It could be my hat. Of course I like it!

A fine lid, you can do no wrong sir. And what's wrong with a little variety?

I met the guy on line... it's funny that he moved into the town where I grew up shortly after I left.

Steve, I've yet to see a fedora that you've made that I haven't liked.

Steve, I like it! For an nonIndy hat, it's still got a lot of class. Nice work!

Thanks guys, I feel better. By the way, that is some of the 1 5/8 vintage ribbon that I still have a few hundred yards of. I used the vintage 1 1/2 pretty quickly, and then again, I only had 25 yards of the 1 1/2. Wish I could find some more of that fine lined grosgrain. The thing is, the vintage ribbon was rayon and cotton, but it differed in that they used to use wood to make rayon. Not so anymore. Fedora

Non-Indy Hat

Post by IndianaWill »

:D Looks Great. If the rear brim was turned down, it would look like a dorfsman Indy. If you have one, take a good look.
I think you did a great job! It does look like one that Alan Ladd wore. :!:

Looking foeward to the 1st....gona order me a Adventurebilt !! A Fedora for a life time!!!

Keep on doing Great Things!!!!!!!

What a sharp hat! My face shape lends to a lower crown. And to coin a phrase ...

"...and I even like the color."

You can even see a reflection of Steve hunched over from all the hard labor!

Steve, "non-Indy" is in the eye of the observer. Only us Indy fans would know the difference. I will bet that virtually any brown fedora, regardless of its shape and dimensions worn with a leather jacket would conjure up images of Indy to the casual observer.

I think that every hat you make will have a little bit of Indy in it. This is by no means an insult - quite the opposite really. It looks cool though. I would never have guessed the brim was 2 5/8"! Looks deceiving to me.

Somehow you have managed to master the elusive Bogart dents!! I've been playing around with mine to get those subtle dents with a tight pinch in the front but can't seem to get it. The proportions of that hat are just perfect.

for whom the hat was made. Steve it is a good thing no one told me you had never made a non indy hat before! Of course I agree with everyone and have fallen in love with my new hat which I have not yet seen in person. Sort of my mail order bride. Hope she doesn't dissapoint me when she arrives at my door. 8)

The thing about hats, both indy and non-indy, in real life and on the silver screen, is that they change appearance. If you look at an indy hat it will morph throughout the film. Same with the Allan Ladd "This gun for hire" hat, which was the model for mine. The hat looks a little different in each of the photos. Hats mirror their owners mood. But what do I know.

Wonderful job Steve,

Winky d.
