Closer than my Close Enough™ jacket.

Post by Snakewhip_Sable »

While down in Hollywood, I found a jacket that's far closer to an Indy jacket than what I have now. It's 30's or 40's vintage, with the front pockets and all, but it's got the ribbed stretch cuffs and waist like an aviator jacket. I think I recall someone saying this style has a name - if so, can someone help me out and tell me?

It's a nice brown, very distressed jacket - it was the only one in the second hand store and it fit me perfectly! Not bad for $13.00. I really like the shorter style of the era.

I'll eventually pony up for the Wested, but for now, I'm pretty durn happy with my find!

Maybe an A-2 style jacket?

yeah, sounds exactly like an A-2...does it have what looks kinda like epaulets on the shoulders?

High Regards, Daryl.

Hmmmm, well it appears to be a lot like an A-2 jacket, but mine has buttons for the front pockets, and the 'hand warmer' pockets are sort of seamed into the centre seam of the front pockets. Other than that, almost exact.

It's a swell jacket, I dig it.

I'll try to get a photo soon.

Buttons on the pockets? Sounds like a G1 or G2 now. Pre-A2 flight jacket design. Regards. Michaelson

Have you thought of asking Rick5150? He seems to know a lot about vintage jackets.

I will do what I can but like someone who owns a hundred hats does not become an expert on hats, I am surely not an expert on jackets. _, Flathead and others know more than I do for sure. I just like to buy them. And wear 'em. And look at them on ebay. And drool.

Mmmmmmm- Leather.

What does the back of the jacket look like? Does it have what appears
to be a belt across just the back panel? Is the back a bi-swing back?
What does the tag say? Does it have the side adjustment straps on it?

If it has a belt like piece of leather going across the back, than it sounds
like an early half-belt design to me, or maybe a late 40's
early 50's style flight jacket. It could even an ANJ-3 if it
has the bi-swing back, but those should have epaulettes, and you
said yours does not, so I think its not a real military jacket.

If it has handwarmer pockets, its not a real A-2.

There's no belt on the back either. It's possible it's almost contemporary, and just HEAVILY disstressed, I guess. I'll have a look at the tag when I get home... and hopefully borrow a digi-camera and get some pix of the thing.

Having this new-to-me jacket really makes me want a Wested. I thought the short fit wouldn't suit me, but it looks good.
