Can't get the side straps to stay put

Post by Mat Cauthon »

Help, I can't figure out how to make them stay put. I have a goat skin and the DD rings. the straps are slipping more and more every day and its gotten to the point where they have come tottaly appart. I have been useing the s/z fold but thats not helping it is just slipping worse than it did before.

Thanks in advance,

Brendon

This is going to sound stupid...but what the heck, it's not like I have a reputation for being smart anyway. ;)

If they are that far gone, the s/z isn't holding, and they really aren't supposed to be used for continual adjustment anyway...

...why not stitch them in place?

I.e., loop them through the proper way, then tack stitch through the existing stitches in the straps to hold it against itself. Permanent...but since they're for the most part just meant to be an accuracy point, not functional...

Commence firing,
J

ummm well I am not quite to the point where I could let myself do that yet. Truthfully it needs to get alot worse befor I could bring myself to stich it up unless there is no other way. I like the suggestion though. If all else does not work that will be what I am left with.

Sure, but just make sure you logoff from COW first...I'd hate to have you miss a thread while out buying a new monitor...fire away!

...back on topic...(sorry, my bad)...

Are the straps distressed (worn), too, or just loose/slippery? I would think goat would be too stiff for this to happen. Did you pecards them, or have they always been like this?

I just got the jacket this Christmas. So it is not that distrest exept on the edges of the strap where it keeps sliding through the DD rings. I have not applyed any Pecards. I think the problem is there are for some reason just slippery

The other option is to double the straps back in over themselves - if this is what you have been doing and its still not working then there isnt a lot more you can do really other than replacing them with buckles.

Try this: Go to the hardware store and buy a roll of electrician's black "friction tape" that is sticky on both sides. Cut thin strips that are less wide than your side straps. Wrap the D-Rings with the tape and THEN put your straps thru. Keep wrappiing the tape in thicker layers (layer upon layer) until the straps no longer slip. This may actually cost about $1.50 to do.

Another option is to turn the d-rings around so the flat side faces up. This sometimes works.

I hear Ford used staples to hold things in place. Must be from his carpenter days...
