Just a couple of general whip questions

Is it actually possible to crack a whip, have the end of it wrap around something, and be able to have it support your weight enough to swing on it, like Indy does In Tod and LC?

And, is it illegal to carry a bullwhip around? Just for GP?

I have been able to wrap it up so hard that it wouldnt come out the regular way, or if you pulled with your best strength, you had to go down to where you had wrapped it up and try to get it out from there, i think those times it could hold my weight, but im not sure i havent ever tried it.

I think the general consensus on whether you can really swing on a whip is no- but it's possible. See here: viewtopic.php?t=7899&highlight=swing

You can try, but you'll probably permanently damage your whip unless it was built for it- I'm not game to do that to my Morgan!

I wouldn't try that. If it snaps in two you could get hurt. Whips for swinging are built over airline cable, aren't they?

As for doing wraps, I was absently swishing my snakewhip while watching TV one night and it actually cracked and then wrapped around my wrist tight enough that I was getting a little concerned trying to remove it. So the fall will definately wrap tightly, but as for it supporting the weight of a person... I don't think so.

btw who of you whipcrakers hasnt ever get hurt with the whip, it might be cuz i ### with it but last week i hurted myself in my leg, omg i dont wanna think how it would hurt to get whipped in you back...

...yes Serenity.... THERE ARE PLENTY OF STORIES OF WRECKED WHIPS. ONE RECENTLY COMES TO MIND WHEN SOMEONE TRIED TO EXCHANGE A BRAND NEW WHIP FROM MARK ALLEN. IT WAS CLEARLY STRETCHED FROM HANGING ON IT. AND THEN THEY HAD THE AUDICITY TO POST THAT SUCH WHIP WAS RECEIVED FROM MARK ALLEN. WEAKKKKKKKKK!!!!

Yes, all of that is actually possible. Is it advisable? No.

And, is it illegal to carry a bullwhip around?

I have never heard of nor come across any municiple codes that make it unlawful to carry or conceal a whip. Whips are generally considered agricultural tools and not classified as "weapons." It is best to consult your local municiple codes though.

I've hit myself in the back hard with my whip before. The ground was slightly wet and after about 10 minutes the whip had become moist enough it lost its snap and lashed my back. My whip ended up fine after I let it dry and pecarded it but my back got hit pretty hard. Just because it didn't rain doesn't mean the ground isn't wet.

Yes, that is a real quote from Clint Eastwood. I saw the video clip, and HE MEANT it. In fact what Edge left out of the signature line was that - "And I mean it". He didn't even smile.

So if it is not advisable to snap a whip around something and swing from it, why does Indy seem to do it so much. He does it twice from what I recall in ToD, and at least once in LC. Maybe he has a stockpile of whips

Indy swings with it once in Raiders, climbs once with it in Raiders, gets dragged with it once in Raiders, swings twice with it in TOD, swings once with it in LC, and snags his Dad with it once in LC.

Remember folks - movies are fantasy. Indy's whip also changes length at his convenience too...

Wow... I want one of THOSE whips!

Now, dare I say that it's much more realistic (in terms of what a whip can and can't do) to be dragged behind the truck, or for him to save his dad, than it is to swing or climb on it?

It's still bearing all of his weight at high speed after being jerked tight at 50 mph. Indy's weight PLUS ground friction. That whip has HAD IT.

Don't rely on a whip for being dragged either.

I myself have mastered the 'art' of lashing something. Just today for example, I was outside near my backyard gate with my Wonrich 8ft, when I decided to try wrapping the whip around the iron gate. I succeeded, and pulls the gate open...ah...

What I did, was I 'threw' the whip foward over head at the top of the gate, and right before the fall touched the edge of the gate, I flicked my wirst up and pulled. It just 'magically' happened...

It won't snap necessarily Strider - it might - but even if it doesn;t both layers of the whip will stretch to high heaven destroying the plaiting and the intentionally designed curve of the whip, rendering it useless for cracking as it loses all of the properties that make a whip unqiue from a lasso or rope.

Because Zorro did it! Indy's whip is a throwback to Lash Larue and Zorro and simlar Serials, and whip-swinging has been a part of movies before sound was! Zorro would often swing through windows or from rooftops, so Indy is feeding his movie-roots.

Plus, it looks cool.

As folks have said, It probably won't snap, but it will stretch the leather to the damaging point, and the whip will never be the same.

When Indiana swung on a whip, it was a whip that David Morgan braided over a steel cable that has rapelling quality harness attachments on both sides.

Shot of Harrison or stunt man swinging on stunt whip. The harness connectors are attached to a secured mooring, and the handle end is attached to another cable that runs down the sleave of the actor/stuntman and connects to a safety harness.

The stunt whip with the steel cable is never thrown, and the wrap in the movies NEVER supports the weight of the actor.

Same thing with the whip being used as Indy is dragged behind the truck. If you watch, it's the wrist loop that Indy attaches to the truck.

Now, to my understanding, the way Morgan USED to make his whips, (indeed the Morgan that I have handled,) the wrist loop is just attached to the handle foundation/lead weight inside the turks head with heavy staples or small nails.

The chance of this foundation holding the weight of a person being jerked at any sort of speed is not good.

Once again, the whip used had a steel cable, and when the stunt man actually is jerked at the end of the whip, he's connected to it. This is certainly not the case as the stunt man pulls himself up to the truck, but you get the idea.
