Where do you guys crack in the winter? Or do you just let your whip crackin' muscles atrophe and get real stiff in the spring when you try to re-learn all you forgot about whip cracking over the cold, snowy months?

well, 'round here, the whip goes on the shelf about October, right after a good rub-down of Picards. Come May, another coating, and she's out about the same time as the Challenger.
Used to be about the same time that the Wested got shelved, since May is a bit warm for cowhide...but with the new lambskin, I'll just trade, rather than go without. (yay!)

Nope! Any smooth surface floor is NOT harmful to leather whips. It's the rough surface type of floors like concrete or asphalt. For that you can buy a piece of astro turf or carpet remnant.Snakewhip_Sable wrote:...Won't cracking on a linoleum floor ruin a whip? Ah yes,
winter time cracking,
yep, I crack whips in the snow, roohide and cowhide, now if its snowing really hard, I don't , only because it gets hard to see.
all I do is put a light coat of pecards on the thong the night before,
(adding a little extra on the fall) then after I'm finished giving the whips a workout,
I lay my whips straight out on the floor to dry, (wiping of the fall first)
as there drying I sometimes add another light coat of whipdressing, (just enough to moisten my hands) adding extra on the fall.
I've never had a problem, . Its really fun to go out when all is quiet and let of a few bangs, then of cores, you feel like yelling Mush! mush! or oatmeal!

Let's see him concentrate on his Tai Chi with that crackin' noise going on!

I didn't know that, Sergi! So now I can crack this on a gymnasium floor and not worry about it. WOOHOO!!!!Sergei wrote:Nope! Any smooth surface floor is NOT harmful to leather whips. Or at the very least, let me come over anduse the space!

Sure, Anytime. I'm not sure what my neighbors will think, but there's one way to find out...Hemingway Jones wrote:

The sound will travel faster in higher temperatures and thus slower below zero. The air molecules are still active below zero, but they vibrate much slower with less energy bumping into each other. So when cracking in below zero-temperatures, what can one expect from the cracking performance? I'm thinking of air density and such...
Any physics experts around here?
When it comes to how far away you can hear the sound and how it seems you can hear sounds farther away on a cold day, we come to the subject of inversion;

Anything good in there?

Is the Doppler effect accounted for?Swindiana wrote:The sound will travel faster in higher temperatures and thus slower below zero. The air molecules are still active below zero, but they vibrate much slower with less energy bumping into each other.

The big problem is that it gets dark now at....what.......2:00 in the afternoon it seems . The sort of kills whip practice after work, and limits available time on weekends.Hemingway Jones wrote:Sure, Anytime.
