Modifying the toy guns...

Okay, Indyblues has purchased a set of the 44 magnums for the two of us, and he's the one who's gonna modify them. Could someone who's modified these before tell us how much to trim off of the barrel to make it fit in the raiders holster? We're not necessarily shooting for the Raiders gun, but just something that would fit in the holster. Anyone done this before?

Well the HE2 in Raiders had a 4" barrel - I guess cutting it down to that would fit?

Is this the old "dollar store" gun perhaps?

If so, I might have some hints on how to modify it a bit. Mine didn't come out all that well, but the basic idea can be viewed here:

Thats not bad, Swindy. The pistols I ordered look exactly the same, but have larger looking grips. Did you modify the grips to make them more accurate?? If so, please tell what you did, because they look pretty cool.

I'm pretty sure we have the same one then.

The grips are cut at the bottom to match the frame length. (?) I then filled the space created using a hot glue gun, but I guess any "filler" will do. The top portions are rounded aswell to match the shape of the original grips. While shaping the grips to the right dimensions you will notice that the parts closest to the trigger will leave a gap. After you've shaped and mounted the grips, put the handle under running hot water and wrap them around the frame to close it all, fixing it with cold water.
I've seen two versions of this gun, but if you have the exact same one as mine the top screw will leave a hole in the frame that you'll have to fill with something. (I used rolled upp cardboard and the hot glue gun, sandpaper and spray paint.) The "medallions" seen are actually the top portions of a snap glued on..

That's pretty much how it was done, with remounting the site after the barrel was cut aswell. I recommend using good tools when doing it and some carefullness not to crack the plastic. I painstakingly used my SAK for the whole project.

It looks OK from a distance I think but I think I would probably do a better job with it in case a had a chance at it again, with better tools.

It started out life like all the rest.
Barrel was cut down to 4 in.
Barrel rail cut and sanded off,then Bondoed and sanded
Rear sights cut Bondoed,and sanded
Original grips removed
Grips from a $.88 Wal-mart cap gun glued on, Bondoed ,and sanded round
Painted it Flat Black
Oh Yeah,and a penny was cut to make the front sight.
I still need to weather it.

Nicely done, Sheffield!

I remember a thread about a year ago where a younger guy had his dad helping him with the conversion aswell. He had nice comparison shots of it with the real gun next to it. It looked amazing! I'll see if I can dig it up later.
