Whipholder alternative

Post by Rosenet »

I'll have a whip for my Indy costume, but I'm not particularly interested in buying one of the wicked cool whipholders. Has anyone had any success with home-made whipholders that don't require a lot of material or labor? A leather thong of some kind, or some strappy thing that costs $5 or less? Maybe a carabiner?

Doesn't quite fit the easy/cheap bit. I'm looking for something along the lines of "Home Depots got this widget that you can ty onto a belt and it makes a totally useable whip holder".

I did find a sex site that sells whip holders for $10 ($15 for two), but they're black. http://www.detailstoys.com/flogger_options.html

Well, it was worth a shot, though I think you could rig up an old belt from the Goodwill for much cheaper than $15. My whip holder is black, but since it's hidden by the bag on top of it, it doesn't bother me at all. Let us know if you find another alternative. Good luck!

Yes, if you do find something easy to pick up cheap, come back and post for us, Rosenet.

I was on the same trail as you - I looked through Home Depots looking for everything. I guess if you have a gearbag that it hangs UNDER, black shouldn't be a problem, right? If you find something like that which works, please do report back.

The other possibility as Bink will attest to is a 'mug holder' from a Rennaisance Fair. Unfortunately, I haven't managed to find a good online source for these, so you kind of have to be at a fair to get one!

Hope I didn't make the belt idea look hard...I was trying to give details. It really was cheap - the only money I spent was under $5 for the press-stud kit. Now that I know how to make one, I could probably do something like that again in 15 minutes, too, I just dawdled trying not to do it wrong the first time!

I hear that tape measurer holders work quite well. I believe if you get the kind that has a snap closure, and you cut off the sides, it woul dbe a very effective whip holder :)

The leather box-type ones? There, now I didn't think of that! Good tip, Daryl!

Hi-ho, hi-ho, back to Home Depot we go...if it's right, I'll buy it and lo, have to stain this one, though...hi-ho, hi-ho...

Sorry, coffee kicked in. O:)

Why not just use a big hunk of velcro. It could wrap around your belt and then you can also make it good and tight so that you won't experience any whip slip. Simple & cheap!

I went to REI last night and got a couple of ideas. They do have velcro strappy deals that would probably work, but the idea of combining velcro and Indy Gear makes me shudder. <grin>

Another idea I had was a leather watchband.

Where would one find a press stud kit for the DIY whip holder?

Rosenet, I think the DIY holder is your best bet. In fact, I'm thinking of triming down the length of my MkVII bag strap and using the excess to make another whip holder. I think you can get the press studs at a hardware store or any place they sell leather working supplies...

Any idea what kind of store sells leather making supplies? That's also north of the Mason-Dixon line? I'm finding the industrial Northeast a little barren in the realm of tack stores, hat stores, leather stores, and generally the kind of stores that make an indy gear fan's heart go pitter-pat.

Indiana Fist swears by Tandy Leather and I believe they are on-line. You could try sending him a PM.

Even when I lived up in the NorthEast I found leather stores...just look in the yellow pages...oh, er...online. (Sorry, dated myself.)

But I found mine in a little hardware store that happened to have a big selection of stuff. If there's a big HW store nearby, give it a shot. Oddly enough, the Home Depot I went to DIDN'T have them, but come to think of it, most fabric stores should have SOMETHING like that. Like JoAnn's Fabrics, etc.
