but I'm really pining for the days of NH, and wishing I'd had about $500 extra back when I heard he was going out of business.
That statement struck a note. When I heard NH was closing shop, I ordered 3 sets of the shirt and pants. Although the NH shirt is a thin cotton material, it is perfect for the warmer months. Has such a nice feel to it too, and really comfortable. The closeup pic of the WPG shirt looks like broadcloth. Fedora

It's not a functional pleat. It's noted above.Dalexs wrote:Regarding the lack of stitching on the pocket pleat,
I have to imaging the pleat may act as a functional expander and not just decoration. Although, maybe not.
My LLBean shirt is the same way. No stitching, but actually expands that additional amount.
Sorry if I was unclear.

Oops! You mean I was suppose to read the ENTIRE review first?
Sorry, I totally blew over that. I ws to busy looking at the pics.
Second, when I saw the actual design of the pocket, I was really excited. It appeared from the outside that the pocket was similar to the LLB in that the pleat would open or expand allowing more room inside. Not 100% screen accurate but very practical. It was only till I looked inside that I realized the pocket was sewn shut. This, for me, was a big let down. When outside, the expanding pocket comes in really handy at place like the gun range to hold extra shells or a pocketknife. If I could change one thing, this would be it.

Pyroxene,
Why is this shirt so large? It looks to me to be a double, if not triple XL. The "original prototype" at the start of this thread is a rather large size as well (46). Wouldn't it be more prudent to start with a size closer to the movie shirts, say a 40 or 42, when designing a replica shirt? Harrison Ford didn't wear a XXL, so why design the prototype for a replica of his shirt in this size? Maybe the shirt was made for somebody in particular?
In comparing the photos of this prototype to the original prototype I agree with Schwammy. It doesn't look like much has changed. In fact, the pockets appear to have changed for the worse. The original prototype at the start of this thread had squared pocket flaps. This newer prototype suddenly has rounded flaps. In addition, as Schwammy pointed out, the second sleeve buttons should be removed completely, and the cuffs themselves squared off.
I'm curious as to why both Wested and WPG seem to have started from scratch when designing their own Indy shirts. It sounds like fans genuinely like their MBA shirts, so why didn't Wested and WPG simply locate one of these and make a direct copy? Is it just professional courtesy that they didn't?
I'm also all for the bellows style pockets. Like you said, although the movie shirts did not have them, it would be nice to have a replica shirt that did, simply because they are so practical. And like somebody here said, decorative stitches could be added to the pockets themselves, to complete the accurate look (either way the pockets still need stitches here). It'd be a win/win. Hopefull WPG will consider this idea, and the others which have been mentioned.

Here are photos of the collars in sunlight for comparison. As far as the shirt size goes, the tag says 46. But, I wear a 50 jacket and it fit me with room to spare.IndyMcFly wrote:I think the collar looks TINY in the first picture... can we get a picture of a different shirt, say a Wested, next to this one in the same positions, so as to see both collars? What size is this shirt we're looking at?

Wested
Yeah, see, that's what I'm talkin' 'bout. If you look at the original "Mean-faced Indy" Raiders poster, his collar has so much fabric that it forms a squared arch when it folds over. The NH collar duplicates that perfectly.
Hear, hear! That's what I want. I may have misled some in my eagerness to praise the Wested shirt. The color in particular is so good. And though it won technically on a point-by-point comparison, in reality I'd rather have a shirt that fits and whose pockets don't look like they were made to hold extra ammunition on an elephant hunt. I am exaggerating for effect, of course. A clever literary device I learned from Perelman. That Brower Kid wrote:I'm curious as to why both Wested and WPG seem to have started from scratch when designing their own Indy shirts. My own 2 cents' worth:
The color being somewhat green causes me to scratch my head. I thought the NH shirt being PINK was a real shocker, but this...?
I wonder if the shirt could be offered in different colors. (This is probably not economical, but I'd thought I'd throw out the suggestion anyway, just in case.)
What do I look for in an Indy shirt? The pleats that run above & below the pleated pockets, a good off-white color, epaulets and something sturdy for everyday wear. The other minor details are largely irrelevant to me.

Tall sizes would be great (6'-3", 17.5"x37" shirt). Very frustrating finding a shirt that ends halfway down your arm, or ends up that way after washing.
As to the extra wrinkly pleats, I've noticed that most pocket flaps, plackets (the front of the shirt where the button holes are) and double stiched seams end up extra wrinkly when you wash them. I'm sure it has something to do with the fabric and stiching shrinking at different rates. Usually it can be ironed out and you don't notice.

The fact is I had a NH shirt and an LL Bean shirt as a guide but still altered it on sound advice from this forum as to their shortfalls.
As for the price I went down the road of WPG but in the finish decided to have it made in the UK because of quality control.
Looking at the stitch work and loose cottons on the sample only serve to convince me that I did right.
That is not to say that this shirt is not good value for money its morelike you only get what you pay for. I also understand that for many fans the costs of this hobby can be a little rich for the pocket and I would not blame them for the cheaper alternative. If this is the route to go I am flexible enough to go with it and offer the cheaper alternative. I value your opinions.
Cheers
Peter

Peter,
From what I've seen, you offer excellent quality garments, be they jackets, trousers, or whatever. As for the shirts, personally, I think it's great to have a handful of options. Yes, I am a price conscious buyer of gear, but that doesn't mean I'm not willing to save my pennies for something I know will be a quality piece of gear. Case in point, I just got my first pair of Aldens yesterday, and my feet are thanking me already.
I am a believer in quality control. The question I have for you is if you have your Indy shirt produced elsewhere, are you willing to hang your tag on the shirt? If you have doubts, then perhaps it is best to keep production of them at home, where you have the peace of mind knowing that you will only release a garment which matches your approved level of quality.
I'm not saying that the WPG shirts are better or worse because frankly, I have not seen either in person to be able to make that call. But there will always be those who will go for the LLBeans, the WPGs, and/or the Westeds.
As for the details of the shirts, the members of COW will always have feedback and suggestions, but regardless of who makes the shirt, I think it's impossible to please everybody. You can take the same screen grab and you may get a horde of different opinions as to colour, pockets, epaultes, and the like. The best you can do is take all the suggestions and work from there.

WPG Indy Shirts Progress Report
I have just finished working with the factory on the last details of the shirt, and production will begin soon. I am still hoping to get some in time for Christmas, but I have a huge number of projects in the works and this is only one of them.

After a review of the posts on this item, it seems to me that the key points of contention are:
Collar Size - too small
Pocket Size - too big
I would thus advocate that the manufacturers try to simply reverse the proportion. I notice the collar more than the pockets personally.
Both the shirts are great though and my thanks to Jerry and Peter for their interest and kindness !
Peace
Ken

WPG Indy Shirts Should Arrive for Christmas
The factory plans to make up the shirts in the next few weeks, and deliver them at the end of November, so, if things go according to plan, I will be able to deliver these in time for Christmas.
When they are actually on the airplane headed for SFO, I will start taking orders.
Also coming in one of the November shipments is a stash of 1000 respirator bags that turned up in some remote 3rd world country (Nepal?) The sample I was shown was an Indian made Mk VI, but I am hoping that there will be a mix of patterns in this shipment. That's all I know at this time. I doubt there will be any selection of smell on these: I expect they will also smell equally bad.[/b]

Still a couple of weeks to go at least I'd say.wpg wrote:The factory plans to make up the shirts in the next few weeks, and deliver them at the end of November,
I too am eagerly awaiting these.
Shirts are Ready
Shirts are now ready and waiting for delivery from the sweatshop in Pakistan. I just have to come up with $60K and they will be on the way. Doesn't look so good for Christmas deliveries, but I will probably get them over here sometime late in December.
