Baron Hats 'Cliffhanger' fedora

Post by Canyon »

I was just wondering if there is anyone here who has bought one of these hats.

http://www.baronhats.com/indiana.htm

It looks like a beautiful hat, but don't worry. I'm not about to spend $425.00 on a fedora as its a tad expensive for me, but I was just wondering if there was anyone here who has bought one of these and their opinions. Also, If so, I would be very interested in seeing photos.

Looking forward to your replies. :P

Canyon:

I own one of the Baron's beaver felt hats. Great quality, feel and good construction. Here are the pics: http://www.indygear.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7610

Screen accuracy nits are the royal blue liner, the black ribbon instead of dark brown, and the turned down rear brim. Feedback is it is more of a TOD hat than a Raiders hat. I have it out collecting dust now as a part of distressing it.

My next hat is probably one of Fedora's when his shop opens.

Hope this helps.

The Baron's is well done! Mine felt like and 'old and trusted friend' from word go! If you like the well up-turned TOD/LC - look, this is the hat for that! Great quality fur and super considerations by the Mark (hat maker)!
It looked broken in from the time it came out of the box. And, with just a bit of wear -- well, the rest is history. I could not be more pleased with this 'Indy' investment! I have always been partial to the 'lift' on the brim in TOD/LC and out of all my Indy-style fedoras, this one delivers this trait the best. If you look up from this writing to the 'shadowy image of Indy -- above', you will get a good idea of how this hat looks in shadows and reflections. Plus, I had an excellent customer/provider relationship with Mark throughout the hat building process. All regards! W>

Hey, WConly... how does the fedora hold up with the heavy rains you guys get sometimes.

Haven't been in a heavy rain with the Baron hat...so, I really couldn't answer that. I tend to be rather protective with my fedoras...usually default to Tilley's when the weather gets nasty! They can take anything -- short of nuclear incidents! I do protect my hats with a water and stain repellent from Hat-World/Lids...this stuff is great -- water beads up like
mercury! Really does the job! Saved my capitol gray PBBM fedora in San Antonio early this year when a bird decided that the crown of the hat was a good place to releave himself. Once the 'do do' had dried, it brushed right off, leaving no trace of ever being there. So, in conclussion ...I can't really give you any data on heavy rain and the Baron. Guess I will need to take the chance sometime and find out. (Maybe?). All regards: W>

That is an incredibly refined looking hat. Though it's difficult to tell from the distance of the photo, it really does look like a million bucks. You're a lucky man. :D

No :( since you said we werent going to meet up i figured it wasnt worth driving all that way. Edit: I recently went to Barons and the Cliffhanger is a very nice hat, the fur is velvetly smooth and it has the perfect ToD style.

Thanks for the report. Did they have more than one and were they consistent? It looks like there is quite a bit of taper in that hat, especially the front and the back as viewed from the side. Also, that ribbon is very wide as is that chunky bow. The brim also looks very small in those photos. I would have to bash that for bridge scene of TOD if it were mine.

It doesn't look like a bad hat, but not what I would be looking for from an Indy Hat.

Thanks so much for the photos and review. :D

In all I would have to say that Tone's Keppler was much better looking, particularly for the price. I'm no expert on quality, but Tone's quality was at least that of the Cliffhanger, too, at least as far as I could tell, if not better. I thought the finish on Tone's was a little smoother and tighter, though the Baron's is 100% Beaver (1000X, said the clerk, Kevin!).

Just to clarify, though, in that first pic I am wearing my Iconoclast, not the Cliffhanger, and Tone is wearing his Keppler. I think Tone's Keppler put both my and Baron's hats to shame!

Hello everyone. I'm new to the site and I did just buy a Baron Cliffhanger. I have not received it yet but I am very excited to get it. I'll have it in about 2 weeks and report my opinion asap.

I was told that the Indiana hat they did was more authentic as the fur felt so you don't have to spend the Beaver Felt money to enjoy an authentic replica. I am more of a sci-fi collector so I think I have a bit of a learning curve to go through but that's what I was told.

cdino, Welcome! I have been a part of the forum for less than a month and have learned volumes. Two months ago I wasted $50 on a wool Dorfman. That sound you just heard was me kicking myself in the butt. Now I'm on to better hats. This is the place to be. Be warned, however, there is no turning back.
