Best costume whip?

Post by Rosenet »

Hey there whipheads (or do you prefer another term?) des anyone have suggestions for the best costume whips? Halloween is only six weeks away...

No, a David Morgan $600 masterpiece is NOT a good costume whip. We're talking cheap but close enough.

What exactly do you mean by "cheap but close enough"?

If you want a good quality kangaroo hide bullwhip, it will run you somewhere from $250-300. If you're not after something entirely Indy authentic, Lee Keppler sells a cowhide bullwhip that will only cost you around $90-100.

It's really just a matter of what you want as far as material and look (and what you can afford).

Hope this helps...

I'm thinking $20-$40. Close enough is a whip that the person on the street would see as an Indy whip when worn by someone in a fedora, leather jacket, safari shirt, khakis, Mk VII bag, web belt and 6" moc toe boots.

Sounds like you need a 'halloween' whip, for costume use only, right? There are always gazillions of 'close-enoughs' and 'not-even-close-enoughs' in that price range auctioned on e-Xxx.

Scandinavia Jones is right - I just bought one from the place that will not be mentioned as well...if you are lucky, you'll hit the 10-20 range on a bid and pay 10 or under for shipping (sometimes they are heavy).

Be forewarned, you'll find HUNDREDS of whips w/ 'Indiana Jones' in the auction title...but almost EVERY SINGLE ONE is Black. If YOU don't care, and you're already in leather and a hat, then you can save some bucks and pick these up for $1 if you look hard enough!

I found brown ones uncommon, and usually expensive, since nearly every brown one I found was a GOOOOD whip. Try searching on 'brown bullwhip' and 'brown bull whip' (nice search engine there, guys... :? )

Me, I got lucky and found one called a 'brown mexican bullwhip', an 8', for $10, and another $6 in shipping - score! 8) It's got a wood handle, though, but for just a halloween costume it would be close enough. (I've got another thread out in 'Bull Whip' forum culling ideas for a handle mod...)

Good luck...and hey, let us know if you do alright, keedoke? There's more Indy-On-A Budgets out there like me...

Hi,
I think you might want to take a look at the following site:

Excellent tip, Bernardo! Rosenet, that's about as good as you can do for your parameters - 6' brown bullwhip, $40, w/ a braided handle!

And this *might* even function better than what you get used...one used one I bought disintegrated with the first whip! The popper survived, the whip unraveled and fell into pieces...I chose poooorly, but the seller gave a full refund QUICKLY. :)

Take a look around the way I suggested before, and I think you'll agree Bernardo nailed what you are looking for, especially considering the other stuff out there people TRY to pass off as Indiana Jones gear!

(Wish I'D seen this before I bought mine! Too bad they don't have any 8' or 10's...)

Hey Indiana Jerry,
Thanks! :D

This particular bullwhip looks very similar to a bullwhip shown on Bruce Grant's Enclyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Brading. It was made by the author, and he gives intructions on how to make one. My guess is that this whipmaker is following that book pretty closely!

There are actually a bunch of whips for sale over at that site that auctions stuff. So what size should I get? I want one long enough that it will look good as a prop, but not so long as to be bulky and heavy. Six feet?

Rosenet,

8 feet looks pretty good coiled and is well managable. 10 foot looks even better coiled, but is a bit harder to manage, especially if it's not a high quality made whip. 6 foots easier to use, but doesn't look nearly as good coiled. I'd say 8 would be a good mix of both worlds. It's one of my favorite lengths. :-s (how many lengths are you allowed to have as your favorite?)

And then there's 9 foot, :D one my favorite thong lengths, having the grace and beauty of a 10 footer with ease of cracking like a six footer,
(providing that its well made) when using the proper form to make those
fluid cracks and occasional big booms.

Cheers.

Hey thanks INDIANAMIKEY, I think I've been bitten by the 9 footer bug,
 but I love it!, first with my 9 foot Stenhouse, then my 9 footer from Jack Perry, truly addicting.

And I admit, I do like doing those loud booms from time to time,
especially when the little town where I live gets real quiet, .

I agree with Paul, Jim, and Mike but it doesn't seem that Rosenet will want to actually use the whip. However Rosenet, if you ever decide you'd like to learn to crack then I would encourage you to save up about $100 and get started with a good budget leather Indyesque whip or a even a nice nylon. I own both a Rhett Kelley and a Tim Bass and their both great products.
Just my .02.

Where can I find Tim Bass's web-site, if he has one, to get a nylon indy whip from him??

Hi Rosenet,

Have you found a whip yet? If not, consider supporting your local whip maker. I could put together an 8 ft. four-plait whip made from cowhide that would have the dimensions of the Indy whip with a wrist loop and oversized knob, as well as an 8" handle foundation. I could make it for $40 plus shipping.

If you're interested, I can 'whip' one together and send you a picture of it.

Best Regards,
