Hey guys, new here wanted to say HI, and some questions

Post by NewJerseyRaider »

Well like I stated in the subject, im new to this board and just wanted to give an overall HEY to everybody here. I think its so cool that theres other Indy gearheads out there besides me! I wonder how many other guys on this board are from Weird NJ?
Im getting ready to order my first Wested. I plan on getting a Authentic Goatskin. The only extras i'm goin to ask for would be 2-piece under arm gusset, X-box style side-strap, (is that the exact phrase I would ask for when ordering?),antique brass rings/zippers/buttons, and a "grail sized" inner pocket, like on the LC jacket.
Im a small guy, being 5'9 and about 130 lbs, soaking wet. Does anyone think I need the extra 1" in the front to prevent ride-up?
I plan on going to the tailor sometime soon to get measured, but have a question about sizing. If I wanted the sleeve length on the jacket to end right around the first joint on my thumb, I would measure right to that point, right?
For Shoulder size, I just tell the guy to measure across my shoulders.
As for Chest size, being a skinny guy, if my chest size is a 32, do I have to order a 38, or could I order a size 32? And since I plan on wearing this in the winter, should I just tell Wested I wanted to wear sweaters underneath, or just order a size larger?
If I dont measure from a coat I own that I like, since there are usually a bit large for me, and wouldnt work too well to measure with, where should I tell the tailor to start from? If I used a jacket as a measuring tool I would start from the bottom of the collar, right?
I figure since im going this far, I might as well order the pants and shirt from Wested too, since I'll only end up buying them later anyways! How would I measure for the shirt size? Im guessing it would be a small, or medium at best, but im not sure.
Thanks a ton for all the help!

I'm only about an inch taller than you and 15 lbs heavier, and all I can tell you is I never got the extra inch, and all my jackets do just fine.

So, take that for what it's worth.

later!

Hey

Wested make custom jackets, so just send in your sizes and Peter & co will take it from there. If you need a 32", they will give you that. If you plan on wearing a sweater under, tell Wested that on the 'Special requests' part of the order form. When measuring the arms, measure to the first knuckle of your thumb, as you thought was the case.

You are wise to order the shirt and pants at the same time - from what you say, you would only end up buying them later and incurr the extra shipping costs.

For the shirt size, just leave it to Peter. Tell him you want a shirt to match the sizes given for the new jacket and he will be able to judge which size would suit you best. (the shirts and pants are standard sizes, not custom, although Wested will hem the pants for you if you send in an accurate inside leg measurement).

Regards

Another thing to keep in mind is the sleeve length. As leather wrinkles in the sleeves they can shorten. I can't remember how much you lose in sleeve length when this happens. Hopefully someone will chime in with that information. Your best best is to get some Pecard leather treatment (I prefer using the lotion) and give the jacket a couple of applications before wearing it. Doing that should keep the sleeve ride up to a minimum. Welcome!

Welcome, NJRaider! When you go to get fitted, take every measurement possible and then give that to Peter. For me, it was worth calling him overseas and talking with him directly about what I wanted in my jacket and what concerns I had regarding the fit. Peter is a wonderful guy to chat with and he'll take good care of you. Good luck!

I think if you give Peter the nitty gritty details, as it were, he'll make note of it and be sure that your jacket takes those things into consideration. Remember, this is your jacket he's making, not a mass production size.

Welcome!

As many a great man stated above, get in touch with Peter and he'll see to your wishes. That goes for the jacket as well as the shirt & pants...

When I picked up my jacket at Peter's, I hadn't made any requests regarding the inner pocket at all. I noticed that it was quite roomy and Peter told me that he makes then "diary-sized" on default. He knows his customers - sooner or later, the average Wested wearer will try to cram down a book down that inner pocket...

I'm a fairly skinny guy too -- I normally wear a small or a size 38S in suit blazers. I've got a Wested lamb size 36 and it fits me like a glove, with enough room for a sweater underneath. I bought it from another COW member, and the main reason it fits me is because I paid close attention to the measurements of the jacket -- shoulder width, sleeve length, etc. Take several measurements of yourself and compare them with other jackets you own that fit you well.

Oh, and welcome to COW! :)

Hi

I am pretty much the same height and weight as you. Personally, I have always found that the Wested jackets fit almost perfect with me in every respect bar one - that is around the waist - I need to specify to make them extra tight around the waist and tio taper in at the waist so I get it tight as per the Raiders fit (also if you want screen accuracy ask for the 1980s tighter Raiders fit pattern - if you plan to wear sweaters for it then dont ask for this and you should find it is roomy enough - on my first Wested I made the mistake of asking for it to be extra roomy to accomodate sweaters and so on as I live in Scotland, but it meant the jacket was a very wide/loose fit on me).

As for the shirt, a size small is the one I wear from Wested and its a great fit so I would go with that. Also if its a little tight then again thats a more screen accurate fit.

Whatever you do dont be afraid to speak or email Peter and ask any questions. They are friendly people over there and they will help tailor it all to your exact fit.

Good luck! :)

Thanks for all the help guys, its always nice to feel welcomed! :D
Indiana Ken- So when you order yours you dont ask for the jacket to be made extra roomy, to accommodate for sweaters, you just leave it as they come?
And Scandinavia Jones-Thanks for chiming in on the one about the diary sized inner pocket, I didnt know they came standard know. Plus I think I read a post wrong, it was the outside pockets on the LC jackets that were diary sized, not the inner.
I'll hafta remember all of this when I call Peter, which will hopefully be tomorrow. Hmm let me think, if I order within a week, then it should arrive just about the time its getting a bit cold here in Jersey :-k
Hey Jersey Jones, im guessing somewhere in the middle of the state, say around middlesex or somerset county?
Im up in the northwest, only a few minutes from the Water Gap. You ever go exploring some of the places mentioned in Weird NJ?
Theres a place up in Alpine I wanna go check out, just havent made the time yet, but I figure the fall would be a good time to go check it out :)

My probelm is always getting it tight enough, especially on the waist so I ask for the 1980s cut which is in itself slimmer and I DON'T ask for it to be roomy for sweaters in the like, and I actually specify to make it tight around the waist. For me in my experience, this is the most effective way to get a good fitting Wested. It should be said though that not everyone has my experience and some others get an extra inch at the front, others don't. I for example had never had a problem with sleeves riding up although that is a commonly complained off ailment some people experience and compensate for.

In short its a personal experience for everyone but rest assured if it arrives and for whatever reason doesnt fit, then Peter will do his very best to remedy it for you.

Good luck mon amis!
