I own the cotton indy and swore I wouldn't buy a leather. Should I do it anyway?

Absolutely,
You know you are going to. The faster you order, the quicker it will come. You know you will anyway.

Yes. The cotton I love, but you really need a leather for the colder weather too and so can rotate them around as the seasons change. Regards. Michaelson

One good sign- I said to my wife (begrudgingly) that I may wind up buying the leather version. Her response-, "oh well".
Does it really get that cold in TN?

Cold enough to look good in a leather jacket.

Ultimately, you have to decide for yourself if you want the leather jacket, but as Indy gear goes, it's one of the most essential pieces of this puzzle. My feeling is that you may be asking yourself this question over and over to the point that you may get one anyway. That's how I got my Aldens, anyhow.

The cotton jacket looks great, but if you get the leather, you may find you'll never want to take it off...

Yes, it does get pretty cold in Tennessee. Had a few weeks in the teens and 20's last winter, and I live on the Alabama border! Regards. Michaelson

If I may quote the late Bruce Lee:

'Don't think, feeel.

It is like a finger pointing to the moon...don't concentrate on the finger, or you miss all the heavenly glory.'

Or, in other words, buy the jacket man!

I live in southern Mississippi and it gets pretty darn cold in late fall and winter. Humidity makes it feel a LOT colder than the temp says.

See what happens when you swear!?

Get the jacket! Yes, it leads to a leather jacket addiction from which you may never recover from financially, but, on the bright side, at least you'll look good on your journey to the poor house!

As far a Lee is concerned, didn't he also say "I do my own stunts."? So I don't put much stock in his wisdom.

Must be all that caffine today. Factor in my pasley tie and my new colorful Stetson with the painted picture on the front, and tie dyed pants, and THEN try and focus. Talk about getting dizzy, even MY stomach just rolled over. :-& never mind. =; Regards. Michaelson

P.S. As I recall, in Jack's case, it was a matter of the cost at the time. Times change, and hopefully so has his pocketbook! :D

I got nothin' against carving up an animal for a jacket. Aldens are leather...I have a pair of those! I was thinking of getting cow hide. Hey, "cow" for "C.O.W.", that's funny...trust me.

I cheated.
I was returning some pants at Eddie Bauer and noticed a very familiar looking leather jacket for sale- ok, familiar at 20 paces. I decided to try on the large…cavernous. I tried the medium…just right, in fact it was perfect. So I asked an attendant what the measurements were: 47.5” chest, 25.5” sleeves, 26.5” back. My cotton indy has similar measurements so I decided to use the ones garnered from the EB jacket. I wonder what the Wested will look like…

Too true. Look what happened to Mary - her lamb followed her to school one day and a whole heap of trouble ensued. And that was only a LITTLE lamb, imagine one with a 47.5" chest!

Good thinking on the measurement front! Good choice with the goat too, it's the perfect mix of weight, looks and durability!

One word for when it arrives - PICS! :)

My normal chest measurement is about 44" so, naturally, when I bought my cotton indy a while ago I ordered a 44. When I got the jacket it was too small in the chest- even with a t-shirt on, so then I ordered a 47" on the second go around. The fit was fine (I probably could have gone for a 46, but I can wear a sweater with it). I had been professionally measured prior to ordering the goat and was told that 44 would be the size, this was even after I told the tailor that I was having a custom leather jacket made, not a blazer, a COAT- something that I could comfortably wear while driving or punching. I promptly threw the advice of the tailor out the window when I was able to get measurements of the EB leather.

Well Jack, funnily enough I also take a size 44 in a suit jacket, but found (through trial and error) that the best Wested size for me is a 43" (Peter will make custom sizes if you ask him to). There are probably a few other factors to take into account, such as shoulder width, posture etc - which may account for the differences people experience in sizing. Using a coat or jacket which fits you well as a basis for measurement seems to me to be a sensible way to go, alternatively get measured by a tailor or carefully take the measurements yourself, if you feel confident to do so.

My Grandfather was a joiner and cabinet maker for 60 years and in turn he taught me a lot about joinery.(as well as many other things in fact).

The best lesson he ever taught me was:

MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE.

That can be applied to a lot of things in life, in a round-about kind of way.

I think that there really is no such thing as a correct "men's" size. The numbers should be used as a point of reference ONLY. For example: If I were to say to Peter that I wear a 98" in the chest, he may then give me a 63.75", I may find it a touch too tight and ask for another inch added, then to no one's surprise- it fits! Now, womens' pant sizes on the other hand are DEAD ON, that's what I call "cosmic irony" (there aren't any women in here today are there? My wife never reads this stuff...).

I think the best proof of that theory, Jack, is the U.S. Wings jacket size chart. They go specifically with weight and height, and 'bang', they have a size for you. In that case, using their chart, I require a large. Problem is, I get LOST in their large. Medium fits perfectly 'body' wise, and yet the sleeves are to short, and yet according to their chart, this jacket would not be recommended! This is the danger of a 'generalized' mens sizing... :? Do you mean how a woman can say, "I'm a size 8..." or "I'm a size 14" or "I'm a size 24" or whatever... and the pants always fit and look right; even given the variation in women's bodies, hips, butts, etc?

Yes. I have marvelled at that, too. It's bizarre.
