Diamond plating on the handle; not always the case?

Post by ArdethBey »

Here's one I've had in my head for a while. It seems to me that not all the whips in Raiders had the diamond pattern. The Mark Allen-owned Glen Randall whip clearly does, but the photo of the Christies auctioned whip shows tha handle as being plaited identical to the thong. It's hard to get a good view of the handle in the movie without his hand on it, though. But the diamonds are something that have always seemed wrong to me somehow, even when I'd look at all the expensive whips I couldn't afford as a kid.

I am assuming you are referring to the picture of the Christie Whip posted on the main site of Indygear. It's the TOD whip as shown below.

I took this photo and blew up the handle area. I am sure I see a diamond pattern. David Morgan makes nothing but a diamond pattern in his whip handles. Do you have any other examples?

I know the picture of the whip from Christie's that you're referring to. I think it's more of an illusiong due to the poor lighting and a slightly out of focus picture. I've seen many pictures of Indy style whips where the handle looks like it has the same herringbone plait that the thong does when it's actually diamond plaited.
