Herb J. sweat question

Post by Scandinavia Jones »

I noticed that the sweatband logo has Herbert Johnson's old adress...

Is this the case with the Lichtschwerter hats too? The crest has the St. James Street addy...

For how long did the hats come with this sweat? Does it say anything about the manufacturing period of the hat, or did they just use up old sweatband stock?

Curious... :-k

That's very interesting - especially the IJ
From Richard Swales' letter (regarding the hats he made for the films):
Just to make the hats authentic each one was initialled 'I.J.' for Indiana Jones.
So, the initials are a screen-accurate detail! Yay! :D

Which hat has the "IJ" initials: the German HJ or the one from London? That's a really cool detail!

If Langpuss hasn't got one in his German Herb, I guess it's safe to assume that the one from Swaine Adeney lacks the initials too. The pic is of my Swales-made, old Herbie.

I believe the shop can emboss any of the HJ hats with the IJ or any other initials for that matter on request :)

Swales would do the IJ on the sweatband if you asked for it. I have one with the IJ and one with my own initials. You're lucky to have gotten one with the IJ.

I just recieved a used HJ today(See Scandinavia Jones other HJ thread)
and mine doesn't have the "IJ" embossed letters, but it does have the 2 different addresses on the crest and sweat.

Another thing I was wondering about all this...The hat came with the original sales slip, and it has "Swaine Adeney Brigg" on it.
Is Swaine, the same as Swane???

That's the London shop that sells the Herbies nowadays - Swaine Adeney Brigg.

This is mysterious - my hat is allegedly of same age as yours, and my brim was cut by Richard Swales - did he still cut the hats after Swaine had taken over?

He did the Indy hats right up to his retirement.

When I called in October 2003 to order my HJ, Kelly Ford mentioned he had retired 2 months prior. So, July, August 2003. Or, I could be crazy, and two months just sounds right.

Yes, you are very lucky to have a Swales-era "IJ" embossed Herbie J. I got my initials put in mine.

Peace,
