Re: Need Help Deciding on my First Indy Fedora

Not sure if I'm exceeding my allowed picture posting here. This hat just gets better with abuse. I've purposefully not been too nice to it. It's softened up a lot, sweat has shrunk up a little already so it fits better, and it's gained a lot of character. I've worn it a few days a week regularly sin...

"Close Enough" Boots

Picked these up on a shopgoodwill auction for about $20. No idea what they cost retail but they seemed like a good close enough option to me. Lo and behold they arrive brand new in box with all the tags still on them.

Re: My Budget "Close Enough" shirt.

Here it is post-dye. I like the way the color came out. Next to an index card for white reference cuz it looks a bit different in the picture vs real life. And next to my close enough pants to see how they contrast.

My Budget "Close Enough" shirt.

Got this shirt at TJ Maxx for about $15. Figured it was close enough except the color. So I went to JoAnns and picked up some "taupe" color RIT dye and plan to dye the shirt quickly so it only gets a light shade rather than a darker, deeper shade. These pics are a bit off. The shirt is muc...

Re: Need Help Deciding on my First Indy Fedora

Im a size 58cm head, measured several times to be sure. My Akubra is a 58 but I have had to pad the band with the supplied foam to get it to fit so in my experience they run a little large. My Penman and AB are both 58's and are perfect. I have to question Akubra size advice. Then again your US 7 1...

Re: Need Help Deciding on my First Indy Fedora

I said this earlier in the thread, but when I ordered my Akubra, they advised me to get the size up to allow for natural shrinkage that happens over time. I do need to use the foam strips for now (the hat's only a month old), but I would rather that, and have the hat shrink to the correct size, tha...

Re: Need Help Deciding on my First Indy Fedora

Thought I'd let you know I have ordered a Fed4 Standard in dark brown. I paid a bit extra for the faster shipping so hopefully it gets here in the next week or so (didn't want to risk it not getting here by Halloween). Per the advice of Trudi with Hats Direct (very helpful) I ordered the next size u...

Thought I'd share what it's looking like after I've worked on it some. There's still things I want to tweak/fix but it's been fun playing around with it to see what I can get out of it.

Re: Need Help Deciding on my First Indy Fedora

Well as it turns out a Junior isn't an option for me. My size it out of stock at the moment. I messaged Thomas at adVintage and he told me the new shipment won't be in before the end of the year. Given the first purpose of this purchase is for Halloween, that's a bit late. Haha. I may get one in the...

Re: Need Help Deciding on my First Indy Fedora

In my humble opinion I think the Advintage "Junior" Indy fedora is a pretty dang good hat for the price which was like $100 & some change shipped from Germany to NC in only a week. I agree that Feds are a great quality hat but the color and ribbon drove me nuts!!! :anxious: N The juni...

Re: Need Help Deciding on my First Indy Fedora

Considering I'm reading with one blurry eye after eye surgery, I'm lucky I even caught the '$50' part of the equation. The '1' merged with the '$' sign! ;) My comments still stand, though. Go on the cheap, you get what you pay for when it comes to fur felt. Good luck in your search! :M: ...

Re: Need Help Deciding on my First Indy Fedora

At your price point, the felt isn't going to be that good, and many times the dye is power dye and releases when wet, creating a brown river of water between your eyes as it releases. Been there, done that years ago. With cheaper felts used, after a soaked hat dries, it tends to taper very quickly,...

Re: Need Help Deciding on my First Indy Fedora

...... I tend to sweat a lot even when wearing straw hats, so having never owned a fur felt hat (though I've owned my fair share of wool) I'm just not quite sure what to expect and wasn't quite sure if the thinner felt would make a difference in that regard. If you sweat wearing a straw hat, then i...

Need Help Deciding on my First Indy Fedora

I'd really like to spend no more than $150 not counting shipping, but closer to $100 would be ideal. (I'm on a college student budget here) It's for my low budget Indy costume I'm putting together for Halloween, but I'd like to be able to wear it simply as an everyday hat following that. I was almos...

My First Jacket Purchase

Picked it up off eBay for a pretty reasonable price. It's an older licensed jacket from I think either the late 80s or early 90s. Someday I will inevitably upgrade to a wested or US Wings or something, but for now, I'm pretty happy with it :) it's my first jacket purchase and a fine addition to my c...

Re: The 5 minute whip: make a whip in minutes

I decided to try my hand at this. :) I made a few adjustments to better suit an Indy look. Cut my handle to 8" instead of 12". I didn't use a pvc coupling to transition between the handle and thong and instead just wrapped the transition with a ton of electrical tape to reinforce it. I als...

Re: Can a leather jacket be tailored?

Thanks for the responses guys. I ended up giving it to a fellow Indy fan who fills it out better. After having so much luck finding it for so little, it would feel wrong to try and sell it for more just because it didn't fit me. My friend was thrilled anyways. :TOH:

Can a leather jacket be tailored?

I found a good Indy style jacket (it's a us wings one) for a really low price (like $10) at goodwill. Unfortunately it's an XL where I wear a M. Do you think I'd be able to get it altered to fit or is the size gap too extreme?

Unfortunately there's nothing to show. There is no liner (I'm planning to add one after reshaping it), the sweatband is just your standard synthetic one (planning to replace it with leather), and whatever tags may have been on it must have been cut out.

Thrift store find

Found this hat at my local thrift store. The color seems good, the band is the wrong size, the crown is 5 1/2 inches tall and the brim is 2 1/4 inches all the way around. I think with some reshaping and maybe trying to stretch out the brim a bit, I could turn this into a halfway decent indy hat. htt...
