Very interesting. I just started looking for a vintage (or vintage-style) gray fedora for a 1942-era event and Northwest came up...and then I found this thread. Well, since I already posted pics in another thread, I might as well tell the whole story. I drove up to Bakersfield in April of this year and "stopped in" at Todd's to check out the new jackets. (I put quotes around "stopped in" because it's not exactly on the way; it's about a ...

Months and months of questions and indecision and waffling... What I would like to see from jacket makers
Of course I want to see the jacket. But what I would really like to see is the leather. I want to see the back (flesh) side of the leather, specifically the color. Then I want to see areas of artificial distress in light, medium and heavy. Take some sandpaper to the finish and let me see how it look...

Thanks for the info. I'll get some good ribbon and go from there, even though at this point I'd rather just hand all my hats over to a milliner and have it done right. But I'd like to keep the cost down and also gain that sense of satisfaction from doing it myself. (Which, IMO, is overrated.)

Before I begin, I'll take a guess: I'm using the wrong ribbon. OK, so I want to put a new ribbon on a couple of fedoras I have (one vintage, one new straw). That's funny; that's the exact opposite of my experience with Todd's jackets. In fact, I think earlier in the thread there's discussion about widening the sleeve diameter with V8 cans. I wouldn't mind having a little more room in the lower sleeve myself.

To my eye, your plaiting work looks better (tighter) than what I've seen on whips costing twice as much (or way more). Is it the beveling of the strands that makes them fit so tightly?
