No, I haven't made any whips since then. I guess I've kind of been on a whipmaking hiatus or something.
I only just started on it so I reckon it'll be at least a couple of weeks yet. I still need to order some chocolate brown paracord for the overlay.

Hi Adam! I maybe don't check the board as often as I have in the past but I haven't gone anywhere ...just haven't posted in awhile. Lash is a nickname that Sable gave to me. No, I have never bought (or have even tried out for that matter) any whips from Paul Nolan. It looks like he does great work t...

Re: Custom bullwhip!
My buddy, Lash (who was a COW member once, but may have been culled in the big cleanup I'm still here (though I'm guessing most everyone else only knows me as 'Dittmer')! So far I've only prepared the shot-loaded core but hopefully by this weekend I'll get a chance to start on the 8-plait belly. -D...

HA! Thanks, Sable. I really ought to make you a proper roo-hide whip though. I plan to make another whip for myself and then I promised my brother I'd make him one but maybe after that I can do one for you. I only have a couple hides left though so I hope it won't be too difficult for me to get more...

Re: My new Indy whip from JERRY R! (PICS)
I really hope I get a chance to try one of Jerry's whips sometime. From the pictures I've seen, his work looks amazing! One of the most underrated whipmakers around, imo. And a heck of a great guy to boot!ob1al wrote:Jerry is a great guy to deal with and more importantly, he makes one *$$! of a whip!

Maul, I don't know if this will help or not but here's a picture of a snakewhip I made in saddle tan and brandy (brandy is one shade darker than whiskey). http://www.dittmer.ca/whips/images/snakefinal.jpg Natural leather, to my eyes at least, appears more 'blonde' while saddle tan looks more 'orange...

Thanks for the reply, Paul. I've been really good about keeping records of all my measurements. I made 2 snakewhips back-to-back and, based on the measurements from the first one, I was able to fairly accurately determine the strand length needed on the second one. However, I've only ever made short...

Made a new Snakewhip!
Today I finished making my fourth whip. It's my second attempt at a kangaroo-hide whip and I'm quite pleased with the results. The whip is a 4' long, 8-plait, shot-loaded snakewhip in brandy and saddle tan. -Mark http://www.dittmer.ca/whips/images/snakefinal.jpg http://www.dittmer.ca/whips/images/sn...

Re: Best length for a Morgan?
I probably should have done some searching in the forum before posting this ...I'm generally pretty good about that. But I still appreciate the reply, Sergei. Maybe the 8 foot is the way to go. I'm sure I'd get more use out of it and I'm not overly hung up on it being 'screen accurate'.

Best length for a Morgan?
I'm toying with the idea of buying a David Morgan bullwhip and I'm interested to know what everybody thinks would be the best length to get. If I were to buy one it would either be an 8 or 10 footer. I don't own a 10 foot bullwhip yet and this one would be more of a true Indy whip but the 8 footer i...

...because of the angle that you are plaiting at.which is approx 45 deg to the axis of the core, and 90 deg to the opposite strands. So someone with a mathematical mind came up with the number of 4.6 and that's how whipmaking got started. Not really! I just know it works. That explanation works for...

Strand Width
Width of strands - (d x 4.6) / n = W where: d = diameter of core n = number of strands W = width of each strand. example: Core is 20.0 mm and overlay is 12 plait. (20.0 x 4.6) / 12 = 7.6 mm (approx) I've been meaning to ask someone about this for awhile. Where does the 4.6 number come from? The way...

As for the knot, if the 4 bight 3 pass turk's head doesn't cover the top of the knob, there are two ways to go. Jerry, thanks for the info. So far, tying the Turk's head has been my biggest challenge in whipmaking. And the main reason for that is that I've been having trouble following the diagrams...

My one major critique is that the first half of the thong needs to have more taper to it. It looks to be the same width and then drop off quickly. Thanks for the comments, Kyle! For anyone interested... I just finished making my second nylon snakewhip. It's 12 plait and the thong measures just a little over 5' in length. I'm happy with how it turned out.
