No, I haven't made any whips since then. I guess I've kind of been on a whipmaking hiatus or something. :wink:

I only just started on it so I reckon it'll be at least a couple of weeks yet. I still need to order some chocolate brown paracord for the overlay.

My buddy, Lash (who was a COW member once, but may have been culled in the big cleanup I'm still here (though I'm guessing most everyone else only knows me as 'Dittmer')! I plan to make another whip for myself and then I promised my brother I'd make him one but maybe after that I can do one for you. I only have a couple hides left though so I hope it won't be too difficult for me to get more...

Made a new Snakewhip!

Today I finished making my fourth whip. It's my second attempt at a kangaroo-hide whip and I'm quite pleased with the results. I probably should have done some searching in the forum before posting this ...I'm generally pretty good about that. But I still appreciate the reply, Sergei. Maybe the 8 foot is the way to go. I'm sure I'd get more use out of it and I'm not overly hung up on it being 'screen accurate'. :wink:

...because of the angle that you are plaiting at.which is approx 45 deg to the axis of the core, and 90 deg to the opposite strands. So someone with a mathematical mind came up with the number of 4.6 and that's how whipmaking got started. Not really! I just know it works. That explanation works for...

Strand Width

Width of strands - (d x 4.6) / n = W where: d = diameter of core n = number of strands W = width of each strand. example: Core is 20.0 mm and overlay is 12 plait. As for the knot, if the 4 bight 3 pass turk's head doesn't cover the top of the knob, there are two ways to go. Jerry, thanks for the info. So far, tying the Turk's head has been my biggest challenge in whipmaking. And the main reason for that is that I've been having trouble following the diagrams...

For tying my turk's head I used a 'mosquito hemostat' (small, scissor-like clamps) that I bought from ubraidit that worked excellent!

My one major critique is that the first half of the thong needs to have more taper to it. It looks to be the same width and then drop off quickly. Thanks for the comments, Kyle! Well, I've begun construction on my 2nd nylon snakewhip and tonight I just finished the 8 plait overlay. So far it's coming together fairly well.
