Anyway, it's truly a lovely hat. The felt is incredibly, INCREDIBLY soft and dense. It's a very heavy hat.

Sticking my nose in to say you won't be disappointed with a Penman, and the wait is well worth it, not to mention John being so awesome to work with. I don't think I've read a bad thing about the man, now that I think about it.

Just got back from a family holiday to Denmark. Loads of pictures will be sprinkled throughout the board. Took my Sahara 'Michaelson' AB with me. It's so, so heavy compared to everything else I own. Mercury felt be weighin' down my noggin. It's now wrapped and stashed away in its hidey-hole where it belongs. Sinners!! It doesn't look like the dimensions are dramatically different. The Swerford is only SLIGHTLY stingier/lower than the Adventurer. The Knightsbridge, however, appears to have a somewhat lower crown with a slightly stingier brim.

Penman, Penman, Penman. The man makes remarkable hats, and he's the sweetest guy, seriously. Husbandu has his "Watchmen" and I love it. Whenever I think of "Indy Hat" I think of ABs and Penmans.

I back the Fed as a good starter hat. And it's relatively affordable.

Perhaps you could also look into scoring a vintage lid off of eBay, perhaps something a bit shorter to sort of ease you into wearing a fedora.

It's probably not the hat that's the problem. I go through the same thing with my wife. In fact, I've just put the thing away permanently, rather than hear "Please don't put that on" or "please don't wear that when I'm out with you" anymore or even "you looks stupid in that...

Pics plz. Like everyone here has basically said, it just takes some getting used to. I find stingier brims and lower crowns suit my face much better, but it even took time to get used to wearing those. Now they just feel "right" and I can throw on one of my fiance's ABs or other tall crown...

And all of my fedoras have the bound edge, interestingly enough. It seems to be the typical finish for vintage fedoras in this style, with these kind of specifications.
