You could be on to something. AFAIK both barrels on the Smith and Wesson's were the same size but he also uses a Browning HP. I always assumed be just had the one size holster.

I don't know if I've read this around somewhere, but I believe Magnoli's LC jackets are modeled after the Smithsonian jacket. You're not the first who's gone down this road. I've gone down this road as well Michaelson. I purchased a TN Raiders in ~1:1 HF sizing and slimmed down to be able to fit comfortably in it.
