There are many reputable hatmakers who make excellent beaver felt hats for $300 or so. Many.

Re: I feel like my heels are hanging ove the edge of a precipice

If a stiff hat is your priority, get a Heritage grade Fed IV Akubra. I have one Fed IV that's made with the Imperial felt and another that's made with the Heritage greade felt, and the difference is surprising. The Heritage is so stiff you could practically use it for a weapon (well, almost). And re...

Ranger36, here's another question for you, if you don't mind my asking, but how old are you? I'm fourteen about to turn fifteen. Since you're still growing, Ranger36, I'd also add that it might be best to get the standard instead of the deluxe, since it may be too small after you grow another year ...

OK, I never do fit in here, in these threads, but...why would anyone want to keep from sweating through their hat, but then put all the white stuff on it to give it the SofC look? Well I'll make this just that much more confusing, i have three fed iv's, the brown, moonstone and the carbon grey. Each one reacted differently. I have two, an imperial and a deluxe. I wear a size 59 but ordered a 60 like they say to do. I wish I had just ordered a 59 in each case. Yes, the tape makes it one size smaller, but since I need the tape on both, I should have ordered the size I wear. The imperial has shrunk a tad, but the deluxe n...

I understand what you are saying but it's hard to come by vintage ribbon. It's even harder to get vintage ribbon 1 3/4 or 2 inches. Modern ribbon just doesn't come in those sizes. I understand. Very nice, Darth! I got my Fed IV this week, too, my very first Fed IV. I was worried about what size to order. I wear a 7 1/4 in a Stetson (size 58), but ordered a 60 in the Fed, and it's actually perfect. It wasn't a tight fit at first (but not loose either), but after adding the foam, it's perfect.
