I've never seen one of those DP cloth hats in person, but judging from the picture I don't think that tight weave will allow for much ventilation :-k

For yardwork in the hot sun a cheap straw hat would probably be a good option for keeping your head cool and shaded.

I have a long oval head, probably a long-long oval, and I have never had the need to do anything to an AB except rebashing (so the turn wouldn't be too extreme, which won't be a problem with your CS) and wearing it as long as it was the right size. AFAIK almost every Wested jacket is chrome tanned, and they have been for years. Only recently have they offered veg tanned leather jackets again. In short, the James dean jacket pattern is what Peter may have used as a basis for the design he was asked to make, not something the costume designer had in mind while designing the jacket ;)
