Re: My quest bullwhip

Thank you!

I'm pretty much obsessed with Indy whips and recreating them in artificial materials to match them as close as possible to the leather ones.
This material is quite close but I need to adjust the taper as it's a bit thicker than 550 cord.

As of now I'm introducing new material for my Indy whips. It's 6mm wide nylon paracord which allows 12 plait overlays to match the original leather Indy whips. Re: Looking for a decent bullwhip

Hi, if you are looking for an proper Indy whip then in that budget you can get a great nylon whip but not great leather whip unless it's cowhide but they are pretty rare to get. Kangaroo hide whips are rather pricey unfortunately due to the hide cost and skill needed to craft the whip. So to sum up ...

My version of Classic bullwhip for whip artists. David Morgan offered them in the past - they were basically the Indy whips but in 16 plait and with a short 8 seam section on the transition. You need to check if the BBs fit you paracord. I used cords from various manufacturers and the width and thickness vary despite the fact that all of them were listed as 550 type III cord.

You won't get a quality whip for that amount of money. Only a costume piece like Todd's costumes whip or Magnoli clothiers whip.

If you want a quality whip you either need to save more money or get a Paracord whip.

As for the lead loaded handle you will need some glue or epoxy to attach it to the handle. Or you can use regular paracord, stuff it with BBs and use some duct tape to attach ...

300 ft should be enough for an 8 footer with 2 bellies of 8 and 12 plait and 16 plait overlay, maybe even 280 ft. But better cut too long than too short. You can't make a Paracord whip with 2 bellies and 12 plait overlay. The cord is too narrow. It has to be 16 plait.

Nick has a tutorial for an Indy bullwhip, 3 bellied with 20 plait overlay if I remember correctly.

Not necessarily. You can make a nylon whip to weigh as much as a leather one. When I make my nylon Indy whips I use longer steel shot core and lead foundation in the handle. In the result the 10 ft Indy bullwhip may weigh even 900 grams.

I can fully confirm that nylon whips are durable and they don't require as much maintenance as the leather ones. When it's wet, let it dry. That's all. Cracker changing is pretty easy to do and you have to change crackers every now and then in leather whips as well.

And they are a lot cheaper.
