I've ordered 2 Fed IVs -- one brown and the ohter carbon grey. Both were a bit large when received and I had to use the sizing foam initially. Over a period of a few weeks, both slowly shrank and now neither have the sizing foam and they fit perfectly.

It is much darker, and darker than the photos posted here show. I wish I could find my pics of the one I used to have. They were very true to color. Can't really comment on past incarnations of the carbon greys but the photo posted is pretty accurate to actual color for a June 2008 Fed IV. Th...

I've had my carbon grey for about 2 months now. Great hat! I found mine to not be overly dark. More of a medium grey. Here's a photo with it next to my brown Fed 4. http://www.stby.com/images/fed4carbonbrown.jpg Same hats a few days earlier in direct sunlight http://www.stby.com/images/Fed4sCarbonan...

Just follow the sizing instructions on their site and send your exact measurement. If they have questions, they'll e-mail you. I've purchased two Fed 4s and while the initial fit was a bit loose on one of them, both shrank slightly to a perfect fit. I measure a 56 and was tempted to order a 57 becau...

What did you order the Carbon Gray Fed to do? :D I ordered mine to pay my bills and go to work for me. So far, it's been pretty disappointing :D I bought the brown one as a replacement for my previous field/hiking hat which finally rotted to pieces after 25 years. Bought the grey as a daily-wearer ...

Aggie: I don't think you really need to worry about excessive/continuous shrinking. Both these hats shrank initially but have stabilized right at proper size.

FtrPlt, got any pics? Not the greatest photos. The camera in my phone has a puny lense and everything has a quasi-fisheye look to it!! The carbon isn't quite as light as it appears. The grey is a bit stiffer than the brown and slightly smaller. Both are size 56 -- my normal size. Both were too big ...

You'll like the carbon grey. I've had mine for about a month or so.

Finally got around to taking some (pretty poor) photos of my hat. I ended up using a slight turn to the left (about 3/4-inch) rather than to the right so the bow actually moved rearwards slightly. I've had my hat about 2 weeks now. I initially had to use all the sizing foam to get it to fit properly...

I'll echo scot2525. I have a brown Fed IV standard which arrived at my house in about 10 days. I was impressed enough that I ordered a carbon grey within two weeks of receiving the brown one.

My hat is stictly outdoors/field attire -- mainly hiking, riding, and working around the yard. As already mentioned, they're superb for keeping the rain and sun off.

Will do.

Been away for a few days hiking. Had an e-mail from Jenny at HatsDirect letting me know the Carbon Grey is enroute. Should be here by the end of next week. My brown lid took about 10 days to get to the northeast US.

Re: Dark Grey

Hence my reason for asking :) I don't think my wife cares for my beat-up brown lid when it comes to going out for dinner, etc.

Thanks YARVTON!
The Hats Direct photo looks really dark on my monitor. I thought there were a few pics somewhere here on COW but I haven't been able to find them. I thought someone said the carbon grey had a bluish-hue to it.

Definitely will search for photos of the Sidney model hat.

Carbon Grey Fed IV?

Anyone have any photos of the Fed IV in carbon grey they could share? I just received my brown Fed IV reg (superb hat) which will be my outdoors/hiking hat. Looking to add a grey hat for daily wear to work, etc. Lots of photos of the Moonstone hat but I couldn't find any of the carbon grey.

Thanks

Gents: Thanks to all who posted on this thread. I really appreciate your comments and opinions. I've decided to go with a Fed IV reg. Still debating the color. Translation: my wife is pushing for something other than brown. I suspect I'll end up with both a brown and grey hat although I'm trying to ...

Gents,
Thanks for all your replies. Sounds like there are quite a few robust hats out there. Still not sure which hat I'll go with but am leaning towards the Fed IV at the moment.

Thanks again for your opinions.

Opinion needed for a new hat

Hi, I've been lurking for about 6-8 months getting a feel for what's available for hats, etc. Great info and superb photos of the various hats on offer. I'm looking to purchase a new hat and am flip-flopping between an a Fed IV and a Keppler. Both look great. Similar costs, etc. My current hat is an...
