Re: Has anyone actually ever used a bullwhip for protection?
Well, I sort of have. I worked on a station in the NT years ago. We often had to muster big mean bulls. These bulls would try and lift both horse and man into the air with their horns, goring the horse. They were very frightened of a whip. You could not go anywhere near them without a whip and hope ...

If they do another movie they could come up with a plot device where Jonesy gets his revolver stolen or damaged, and has to rely soley on the whip to get everything done that 'needs doing'. It would be fun to see. I can remember even my young niece when the last film came out complaining that you ba...

Aussie whipcracking
I wouldn't mind seeing more Aussies cracking bullwhips. In the Australian Whipcrackers and Plaiters Association competition rules for whip cracking they state that only stockwhips are to be used. I think it's great that Aussie traditions are being maintained but I think it wouldn't hurt to start add...

Re: A new 6' Jacka, plus discussion of Indy IV whips . . .
I bought a J series 10 foot. I thought it was unique and very well made but in the end I just didn't like it so I sold it. Not for everyone, as Dan says. It was too heavy and stiff for me and reminded me of an overly tensed muscle. It's a creative new design, and worth a place in any serious collect...

Richard Taubman, who sometimes has ads in the APWA journal for kangaroo hides, once had a very long bullock whip which he demonstrated at the Brunette Downs races in the northern territory. It acted as a drawcard for potential buyers of his stockwhips and other gear. It was made out of redhide and w...

Re: Well aged DelCarpio?
I agree, Bernardo makes a top Indy whip, the best for vintage Morgan design and overall appearance in my opinion, yet a del Carpio has its unique style too, that sets it apart and identifies it as Bernardo's work. This is like fine wines or violins or something.

Re: Strain 28th Anniversary Raiders Whip
Yeah, by the way Terry Jacka makes a great bullwhip. I was reading what I wrote above Dan's post. Some might think I was saying that the Jacka Indy whip is similar in action to an Australian stockwhip. Forgive my writing, as that isn't what I meant. I meant that many Aussies tend to like whips with ...

Re: Strain 28th Anniversary Raiders Whip
In Australia traditional whipmakers and crackers feel that a whip should have an action as close to a stockwhip as possible. Ask an Aussie who has experience of whips to crack a short handle bullwhip like a Morgan and they'll more often than not hand it back with a less than impressed look on their ...

Wow! All three look really great and top notch SA raiders whips. I would like to own all three makes. I still hold to the view that Bernardo has the slight edge when it comes to that extra special raiders/vintage Morgan look. Especially the handle braid and the look of the turks head knot.

Re: Question (ever had to defend yourself with a whip?)
Regarding snakes, I worked at a cattle station (ranch) right after a few seasons of good rain and there was a plague of snakes. I saw the stockmen kill a few. They would try to get the whip to crack right at ground level which isn't easy to do accurately. A whip normally cracks higher up in the air....

I had an expensive stockwhip go bust at the keeper (the loop at the handle connection) once. It was the keeper on the thong, too, not the handle, so stockwhips are by no means free of transition problems. But I agree, definitely better at some things. It isn't a terrible analogy, 'cause we're in the...

Definitely bullwhip for me too, my colleagues of the thong... It's what I started with. Also, there IS an advantage that the bullwhip has over the stockwhip. The thong on a short handle bullwhip is closer to your arm than it is on a stockwhip. As you throw the whip forward, and start to form the loo...

Like the Fish, I think the waterside disarming scene in Raiders, though a theatrical introduction of the character of Indy Jones, is very plausible. That is why this opening scene is powerful. Crazier and more unlikely things have happened in fights and confrontations. Surely, the fictional Jones is...

I started out with a bullwhip, then bought an RM Williams stockwhip. I've always much preferred a short handle bullwhip but Australians who grew up on a farm or station tend to think of them as unpractical. Give a farm-raised Aussie a bullwhip and they'll give them a few swings and say "nah...t...

Some whips I have seen, at least ones I've made myself, both stockwhip and bullwhip, have a double curve or slight s shape. Hold the whip at full length so that it unravels vertically. Great posts by everyone here I reckon, especially Lauren's. It may be possible to make a whip without a curve but of what practical use would it be? You wouldn't be able to coil it.
