Re: Has anyone actually ever used a bullwhip for protection?

Well, I sort of have. I worked on a station in the NT years ago. We often had to muster big mean bulls. These bulls would try and lift both horse and man into the air with their horns, goring the horse. They were very frightened of a whip. You could not go anywhere near them without a whip and hope ...

If they do another movie they could come up with a plot device where Jonesy gets his revolver stolen or damaged, and has to rely soley on the whip to get everything done that 'needs doing'. I wouldn't mind seeing more Aussies cracking bullwhips. In the Australian Whipcrackers and Plaiters Association competition rules for whip cracking they state that only stockwhips are to be used. I think it's great that Aussie traditions are being maintained but I think it wouldn't hurt to start add...

I bought a J series 10 foot. I thought it was unique and very well made but in the end I just didn't like it so I sold it. Not for everyone, as Dan says. It was too heavy and stiff for me and reminded me of an overly tensed muscle. It's a creative new design, and worth a place in any serious collect...

Richard Taubman, who sometimes has ads in the APWA journal for kangaroo hides, once had a very long bullock whip which he demonstrated at the Brunette Downs races in the northern territory. I agree, Bernardo makes a top Indy whip, the best for vintage Morgan design and overall appearance in my opinion, yet a del Carpio has its unique style too, that sets it apart and identifies it as Bernardo's work. This is like fine wines or violins or something. :)

Yeah, by the way Terry Jacka makes a great bullwhip. I was reading what I wrote above Dan's post. In Australia traditional whipmakers and crackers feel that a whip should have an action as close to a stockwhip as possible. Ask an Aussie who has experience of whips to crack a short handle bullwhip like a Morgan and they'll more often than not hand it back with a less than impressed look on their ...

Wow! All three look really great and top notch SA raiders whips. I would like to own all three makes. I still hold to the view that Bernardo has the slight edge when it comes to that extra special raiders/vintage Morgan look. Especially the handle braid and the look of the turks head knot.

Regarding snakes, I worked at a cattle station (ranch) right after a few seasons of good rain and there was a plague of snakes. I saw the stockmen kill a few. They would try to get the whip to crack right at ground level which isn't easy to do accurately. A whip normally cracks higher up in the air....

I had an expensive stockwhip go bust at the keeper (the loop at the handle connection) once. Definitely bullwhip for me too, my colleagues of the thong... It's what I started with. Also, there IS an advantage that the bullwhip has over the stockwhip.
