Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues...

I've had my hat for a couple of weeks now, but just now got some decent pictures. I had to find time in between all the rain we're getting. It's a wonderful hat and I'm very happy with it. Thanks, John (I'm not the one modeling it, by the way) O:) http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/8725/penman13.jpg h...

I'm glad you're OK too, and so glad your daughter wasn't with you. I really don't understand drunk drivers.

Less front and back taper. I wish they'd go with a thinner "Ultrafine" felt, like the Squatter used to have. I'd like a color closer to a Miller. I've never seen a Fed IV, except in pictures, but do they all have front and back taper? Some of the pictures I've seen show some taper, but so...

I've put shoe stretch on the sweatband when stretching it a lot. I'm sure this kept the sweatband from splitting. Unless you use a full crown stretcher, the crown may flare out at the bottom after stretching.

You might want to look at the Akubra Campdraft, if you don't care if it's an Indy hat. These are very nice and a bargain for the price. Similar to a Stetson Open Road, and they come open crown.

I think it would look OK either way, but I think you are able to wear a wide brim just fine. The longer I wear hats, the wider I like the brims.

This is a dress hat with a 2 7/8" brim and it is one of my favorite hats.

My dad had a Stetson cowboy hat that had a metal wire in the sweatband, but that's the only hat I've ever seen it in. A guy at the store where he bought it cut the wire when it needed stretching.

I'm really bad about picking my hat up by the front of the crown, but I try to be gentle and not squeeze. I'm trying to break that habit though and try to pick it up by the brim and the crown at the same time.

I recently found a LL Bean flight jacket at an antique store and I used Lexol on it. I first used Lexol cleaner, then Lexol conditioner. A lot of folks recommend Lexol for sweatbands in hats before stretching. I never thought of using Sno-Seal, but I might try it.

I wear a fedora everyday. I've only gotten positive comments when wearing them. Some of the folks I work with are now interested in fedoras, and one has already bought one. No one has mentioned Indiana Jones yet. After a while no one even seems to notice, I guess they just get used to you in a fedora.

I have stretched a couple of hats at least one size and they seem to be permanently stretched. I use an old aluminum stretcher that stretches the whole crown. I think this works better than the smaller stretchers.

Just thought I'd post these specs. Camptown has a 5 1/2 in. crown. Ron says this about the Federation IV: Crown height is 5 5/8ths inches. It is 1/8 higher than the current Indiana Jones movie. The key issue in choosing this block is the flatter dome and slightly lower height than the current model...
