Re: Will a short whip do all the same cracks as a long one?
There is a reason most favor 5-9 feet. With a short whip you're forcing it a bit more and the mechanics of both the whip and you are abbreviated which will effect learning down the road. Get out of the garage and really learn to use a whip. Then go back to the garage and use what you learned.

I've posted pictures before but here is a shot of my hybrid. I don't think Louie purposefully based on an Indy whip perhaps it's more of a later Morgan but notice the taper in the handle and the think strands. I think it's a bit TOD and LC. Very Indy :D http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m3/hollywoo...

It's true. She uses the whip in a variety of ways and demonstrates cracks that IJ never attempts. I'd say Catwoman takes the whip cake on this one.

Price is a terrible way to buy a whip but I get you. Check out James Emery of Classic Bullwhips. A glance at his site gives a price for an eight foot cowhide whip at $280. That will get you a well made whip. A whip that looks the part and performs well. Look at some of the threads about his cowhide ...

Sorry for the snarkiness of the reply. With all due respect these whip threads are getting rather grating. For reasons I hope I don't have to enumerate. But I will because it's late and I'm bored: 1. I can't help myself but say although the result LOOKS good, that is not the best way to care and maintain a whip. I would consider the above a PROP only and that the treatment given to it was for aesthetics and use in a costume. Does look good for what it is.

Take a walking step and pause when the rear heel breaks. Settle a bit to find your balance. Your head, shoulders, hips, knees and feet should be aligned in the direction that you want the whip to go. Use this as a starting point. My rear foot is normally off at an angle but we're working on that. Un...

Re: The Fast Figure 8...FINALLY!!!!!!
One of the best ways to start working these cracks is get a whip that will do them easily. A stock whip is a good bet. Midwest Whips Hybrid whip would be a good start. You can make a VW Beetle do some pretty cool stuff but there are other cars more suited.

_! Good to see you in the bullwhip section. In terms of protection, I just don't think anything over about a 4 foot whip would be practical in any environment where you might get into a fight, ie a bar. Too close of quarters to effectively use it. You'd probably be best off using the handle as a cl...

Work on your technique and don't crack so loud. Turn it into less noise and more form and you'll find you can still "crack" your whip and do so in public places. That's what I do.

There is no one save for Colin at Aussie saddle that really carries Terry's whips right now. The wait time can be short or it can be long but it's worth it. And that is something that many people aren't willing to do for some odd reason.

Comes from my Kenpo, gaining power from transitional stance changes. As I threw I was moving into my twist, as the whip extends I've settled and drawn my power through the ground. The loudness of crack has no bearing on the weight of the whip and when looking for a good whip I judge how quietly it cracks.

Start with the slow figure 8. Once your comfortable with the alignment both forward and back, move to the fast figure eight. I've this crack works best if I do the forward crack higher then the second to maintain my momentum and energy.
