Good news for whipmakers?
Demand for Australian leather has dropped to an all-time low as worldwide consumers cut back on luxury items.
Since mid-September, farmers have seen the price for a medium-weight hide fall from A$35 ($24.3) to a low of A$9.

Adam, I don't do that, but I do wet the handle/transition and knots and dry before sending them out. That way they start as stiff as they are ever going to be, and break in normally.

Robby Amper had him doing all the basic cracks in about 2 hours (which is why I now sell them).

Stiffness depends on the tightness of the plaiting and the binding.
I am a binder, and my whips are very stiff for the first couple feet.
And Ryan,
when it comes to whips most things worth doing takes time.

Tell me more about the whip you are trying to build.
I just went back and re-read. For 12 plt end with a single strand core and 4 plait.
12 plt is only good to about 6-6.5 feet. You can stretch it to 7.

Dont take it all the way.
Stop it a few feet from the end, or your taper wont be right. Twist up the ends on your core and floppiness is gone.

Re: Nylon paracord sizes
either one will work.
BB's use a single strand. Chain use 3.
Forget the vet wrap. It is too spongy and will not work to stiffen the the transition. Stick with e-tape or duct. Vetwrap is good for fleshing out a whip but will make the lil 12 plaiter too thick.

I agree with Lauren's assumption as to why there are curves in new and old whips...but if Terry Jacka says his come off the bench without a curve, I am inclined to believe him. There are quite a few Aussies that probably know a thing or 2 about whipmaking that has never been shared with the world.

Perhaps it is better to say that a perfectly made Terry Jacka whip will have no natural curve. :) I think any leather whip forced into a coil will develop this.
