Re: New Indy Tablet Bag

I've been carrying my iPad in this for a while now. I like the protection of the rather ridgid leather.

Re: Akubra Pastoralist with Raiders Bash

Before and during pictures. I really like the Pastoralist rebashed. I would like to try a light colored hat, maybe a sand Territory. I think it would make a good Florida fedora. Big air vents and I would take out the lining if it had one. http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/855/p1000266w.th.jpg http:...

Re: Akubra Pastoralist with Raiders Bash

Indy style bash with an Akubra Cattleman, at least my first attempt. Got it on Ebay as a project hat, to turn a cowboy style hat into a Fedora. Cut the brim to 2 3/4 (non-dimensional), adjusted for long oval, rebashed it and replaced the leather hatband with a ribbon from Todd's. It did not have a l...

Re: Land's End Canvas Crosby boot: A second look

Glad you like 'em! You sure worked hard on them. More boot than shoe look to them now. Just be gentle with the hooks. The pair I tried had hooks so weak they bent the first time I laced them up. I confess, I like to lace my boots tight, but still...

For what it's worth, the Ironworker boots are made in America by Chippewa. The Lodge boots (both versions) are imported.

Re: CHECK THIS OUT...ALDEN ALTERNATIVE

Well, returned the ones I ordered to the local Sears with no problem. However, the return did not cover the shipping costs even though they were defective. Guess I'm out the $13 shipping and handling fee. :(

Re: CHECK THIS OUT...ALDEN ALTERNATIVE

Just got a pair of the Lands End boots/shoes. (they are more like high shoes than boots) Very disappointed. Leather looks and feels like plastic and the hooks bent the first time I tried to wear them. I have a pair of the LL Bean Ironworker boots and they are terrific. I've worn them for casual wear...

Re: New LL Bean "close enough" boots...

P.S. My LL Bean boots are the Ironworker boots, not engineer boots. Sorry 'bout that. Oh, and by the way, the Lands End shoes are very dark brown and the stitching on the toe is purely decorative and almost white in color. All in all, the Rockport Farnums I've got are much better quality, very comfo...

Re: Leather MKVII-style bag

Sorry, no recent pics. Looks nearly the same as when I made it. The leather was pretty stiff originally and hasn't changed over the years. That was my intention. It provides better protection for iPods, iPads, cameras and such. For other uses I've thought about a soft leather version like yours. Loo...

Re: Leather MKVII-style bag

Fooled around with the idea of a leather version a few years ago. It's my iPad case now. Darn near a perfect fit!

bound edge

Although not screen acurate, I like the bound edge look. This is an early pic (I seem to play with the shape, pinch, etc. about once a year or more) of a Beaver Brand hat made for The Man's Hat Shop in Albequerqe, NM. [img=http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/8148/dscn03972le6.th.jpg]

MKVII style bags

Just came across this subject. Nice work on these bags! Inspires me to make a laptop bag. I did not keep the patterns for the leather one I made, as it had some minor problems that I corrected as I was making the bag. I have a fair amount of experience with leatherwork and will adjust and design as ...

Pecards

You can likely get the basic Pecards leather dressing at Red Wing shoe/boot stores. It's labeled Red Wing, but it's the same stuff. Looks like a tub of petrolium jelly. I've seen on other threads that it is made for Red Wing by Pecards. I've used both and they sure seem exactly the same.

Yea, punching the stitching holes goes without saying unless you are using 1 to 2 oz leather. Pulling thread through pre punched holes is still a chore and puts wear and tear on my hands. But the results are worth the effort (at least most of the time!). Good luck with your bag. Post some pictures w...

Thanks again for the comments. I can empathize about the hand stitching, It's all I am able to do and my hand do get sore. I don't do enough leather work to keep my hands tough!

Rockport Farnum

I've had a pair of the Rockport Farnums for a couple of months now. Having worn Rockport shoes for years, these are sized a bit big, probably half a size as mentioned above and elsewhere seems about right. As I often like to wear heavy socks or doubled socks for extended walking, the extra room work...

leather Mk ?

Thanks for the comments. Yes, the strap attachment should be fine. In 30 years I have never had a copper rivet fail. The leather will have to rot away first. I used veg. tanned cowhide for a bit more rigidity, and the doubled back and bottom contribute to this. A little more protection for iPod, cam...

leather Mk ?

Here is my rather loose interpretation of a Mk V (I think---the type with the pocket on the back) in leather. Obvious differences include Lift-the-Dot fasteners similar to US military gear of that era, and a different interior, set up for my intended use. Dimensions are very similar to the issue bag...
