I don't own an AB, but I own a Gray Fed and 2 Snowy Rivers and 3 of Art Fawcetts hats.
If the Ab are as nice as Arts then there is no comparison to an Akubra.
The fit, finish and quality of materials of a custom made hat is evident as soon as you hold both in your hands.

I don't like the foam. My Fed fit fine front to back but was loose on the sides.
I folded up strips of paper towel and put them under the sweat on both sides.
If and when the hat shrinks a bit I'll take them out.

I had to trim my Fed and I took a drawing compass set it to 1/4 inch scribed a line all the way around then took a pair of sharp scissors and cut the brim. Sanded the edge and it was all good. Have put through a number of boxs on this one iin .44mag, its nice piece of work. Hoeever I think if it had woooden grips it would be more Dr Jones. Depending on the width of your face your Fed might look better with less brim. I trimmed 1/4 inch all the way around and mine suited me much better.

I sand the moth nibbles on my e-bay hats all the time. I soften the edges of the divots with 220 grit sand paper and then go over the area with 320 or 400 grit. I like the yellow coated paper. You'd really have to go to town to wreak a hat.

Pre 1970 Stetsons are very nice hats. I have 3 Royal Stetsons. A brown. a black and a tan and the felt is very nice. I don't wear them as much as I used to as they're 2 inch brims and I've gotten into wearing broader brimmed hats.
