So I've had my 59 fed for about a week and it's gone from dropping straight down onto my ears to a perfect fit- the clincher was the lampshade trick- I wet the entire band and felt behind it and put the hat on my large drafting table light (incandescent). It definately varies on the internets...
But to my eye when looking at the Fed outside in the sunlight there is no grey or green tint to the felt. Have to see how this hold up as I

The XL might be the way to go for a 36-36, to get the length, but you will probably have to have the waist taken in. These pants are in lots, so size is kind of approximate...

As far as I know the batting isn't actually insulation. I think it's used to help hold the liner together while it's being constructed. The batting is sewn into the liner only around the seams-
