Re: Unique Bullwhip Handle
I'm going to imagine it's fairly durable. I gave it some test cracks and it didn't feel fragile, but then I also wouldn't back the truck over it. I've found a picture of shark vertebrae used as a riding crop: http://p2.la-img.com/1605/38788/16615176_1_l.jpg I've also seen a shark vertebrae cane that...

Unique Bullwhip Handle
About a week or so ago I was at a junk shop and found a piece of shark spine / vertebrae and thought it would make a neat whip handle. Here's the shark spine when I got it: http://bullwhips.org/how-make-bull-whip/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/whip-handle_1_150114.jpg And here's the finished bullwhip: h...

Blake, From what I know about how Ringling currently works, most of the specialty acts secure their own props. So a whip that ended up in a Ringling show probably wouldn't have been bought by Ringling. The whips currently in the Ringling Gold Tour aren't from David. Here are a couple of cell phone p...

Indiana Croft, One thing I've noticed for me when learning to do different cracks is that my RIGHT hand learns faster, however my LEFT hand once it finally figures it out learns it better. That whip's handle looks very different from what most of us think of when we think of "The Raider's Bullwhip", they should have no trouble spotting it in the movie and having a still to back it up.

I cracked a rubber bullwhip that someone had a few years ago, unfortunately I don't remember the maker. Honestly I wasn't a big fan of it's action. A couple things to consider about what way of paring covers the whip better (same side or opposite corners): 1. the same side would be the best way to fill a circle IF the strands ran in a straight line, but they don't. Depending on the width of the strands in relationship to the insides of the whip...

Unfortunately wasting skin is part of the learning process. When you are starting out you'll learn more from failed attempts and ideas than from your successes. Not only how to do things but more importantly why things are done one particular way.

As a general rule when you are starting out always cut wider and longer than you need. You can always resize the strands making them smaller, but never bigger. So if you get to the point and they are too wide, then you simply make them thinner.

Be careful not to use too much dressing or your whip can end up with greasy spots. Spots that end up with a lot of grease for whatever reason and are discolored and don't match the rest of the whip...they'll look like greasy spots!
This can happen with plaiting soap as well as dressing.
