I agree. I think the authentic goat would suit your needs.

While the lamb is more screen accurate, the goat is more durable! Personally I love my washed goat but while it looks more 'worn' than the others, it is a bit lighter so it wouldn't meet your requirement for a darker jacket!

The way I figure it, Steve's schedule benefits the entire hat industry. Steve's was the first fedora I ordered but it'll be the 3rd I'll receive! Ended up getting 2 Federations in the meantime to tide me over until the pièce de résistance arrives hopefully later this year.

Don't count on it. Check the length of an existing jacket that you like and go with that. Don't forget to measure from the bottom of the collar stand.

For my money, goatskin will always win out over horse and cow for the simple reason that it is arguably tougher than horse on the more traditional levels, and therefore tougher than cow, AND it is generally thinner and more pliable. The later makes construction easier, i.e. tighter seams and better...

I actually took an old dress belt, split it down the middle, cut it to length and inserted it under the sweat band. It perfectly made up the 1 size difference I needed and felt much better than the flimsy foamy thing I had in there.

Pecards standard/jell does not 'put a shine' back on your jacket. You can get a low shine if you give the leather a good long buffing after it soaks in, but it's not a 'polish' type product. I don't use mine on a daily basis but it's great when travelling! I've taken mine from Egypt to Tunisia to South America. It's a very handy size for day trips and sight seeing.

For 15 bucks, I went to a tack shop and had one made to my specs out of fine English bridle leather. That even included the Chicago screws placed where I needed them. The toughest part was finding a local place to get the buckle...but I finally did find one....cost me another 2 bucks.

As for getting it wet....you really have nothing to worry about! (cover your eyes Michaelson)... I've put my USW goat in the wash...twice ..to add a little character to it and it's still in great shape.

Actually camel leather is very prevelant in North Africa. When I was in Tunusia I purchased several items made out of camel (although there were cheaper donkey alternatives). I find the camel quite different than what we might be used to. Its thin but seems to be very tough! I overloaded a camel bag...

For my subsequent orders, I simply specified dimensions for a more tapered, V-shaped back-panel, You can do that?? I had this happen BIG time on my Wested cowhide. The cow being so stiff didn't help.
