What part of Colorado are you in?
...In case my kids ask what that loud popping is over the horizon, I can just say, "Another happy whip owner."
I'm in Denver.

Reviving an old thread here. Those mistakes are very forgivable considering it's your first. My mistakes as far as my first were from simple impatience. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/aaargoxx/whipevolution/alldone.jpg I usually have to actually write down the plaiting patterns while I'm wor...

I did experiment with it for braiding before I tried with leather just to attempt different patterns and styles. I cut out several strips, folded them over and made a very small section about 15 inches long around a length of plastic tubing for a core. I had a pic but got rid of it. The problem with...

Herr Jones, your stuff looks great. Can't agree with BullWhipBorton more about the strand cutter. I got one because I was over anxious and wanted to finish the thing to hear how loud it would crack. It worked okay for my first whip (I think) mainly because I used some really thick leather. For thinn...

Herr Jones, Your thread brings a tear to my eye. I started as soon as I joined on this forum and the good folks here are extremely helpful. So far, I've made a ten-foot, ten-plait and an eight-foot, twelve-plait bullwhips. Both explode when cracking sidearm -but have a tendancy to open a vortex in t...

Well, I'm putting off the next project for a bit. I'm making a leather bag for all my tools for whipmaking. I GOTTA organize all this @#$%! Carrying around five plastic grocery bags full of scraps, tools, books, scraps, Pecards, etc. is getting to be a real pain when I get to and from work. I'm just...

After you put it on, try standing on the cracker itself and then pulling on the fall to make sure it's ultra tight. Done that as well. Lately I grab both ends and give 'em about three good yanks, then crack the whip a good couple of times. The problem isn't them coming off -I kinda expect that. It'...

Update: Well, these last four days off were knife sharpening research days. I dug everywhere on this subject and found someone on a forum who claimed to be able to hold a long single strand of hair with one hand and cut it with a knife with a single swipe. It's a very interesting read and I'll have ...

The Incredible Dissappearing Cracker!
Dangit! That's TWICE I've lost a cracker! What is it with these things? I put the cracker on through the loop as it shows in all the books I have and it comes off. But that's not the problem. I can't find the dern thing afterwords! Do they slam out of our space/time continuum when they hit supersoni...

Well, I re-learned all the cracks I knew as a youth and a few more. I can make multiple consistent booms from side/overhead/side combos. You were so right, Paul. My muscle memory did come back -with a vengence. I also learned that foot placement when launching into a throw does wonders for power. I'...

Still, the only pop I can get out of this monster is from the sidearm crack. I'm narrowing the root causes to 2 things: The horsehair cracker is too stiff, and I'm WAY out of practice (it's been only about 20 years!). I'm going back to work graveyard again tomorrow night, and will be up on the rooft...

Thanks, Steve. I am quite anxious to get started on the next one -and do it correctly. My Wife LOVES this first one and wants me to mount it on the wall. A really rough estimate on the amount of time it took to make this would be somewhere in the area of 10-15 hours over the course of four days. It'...

Well, it's been eight hours into the shift and I still haven't cut any more than trimming off the sharp edges on the big pieces. I've spent most of my free time measuring, marking with a pen, remeasuring, tracing and reading. I sure wish I'd ordered those other 2 books earlier, but I had to wait for...

My first homemade 10' bullwhip (FINALLY done! 11/1/5)
Well, like I said in the other thread, I'm taking the plunge into making a whip. The end goal will be a ten-foot, 12-16-plait bullwhip. Since my skills aren't yet honed to perfection, I'll not be using kangaroo hide for this as it's more of a "See what I can do," situation. I could have pi...
