I think what might be used is Acrylic paint pigment. Many modeling paint brands like Vallejo, etc. sell acrylic pigments which are used to weather models to give them that in that dusty in the field look.
Just a thought, and good luck with your distressing project.

When I go vintage camping, or to the gun range with my S-W M-1917 revolver, or Mark VI Webley I always wear the belt and Holster. Have done so for some years now.

I have been using Pecards for years. It is a life saver for leather boots and shoes if you use them outside. I treat all my Civil War, and 18th century era shoes with it and Pecards has never let me down. Good stuff.
