Re: David Morgan - Year he Stopped Making Whips?
If memory serves me, he stopped making them sometime in 2007. In my last visit to Mr. Morgan's shop in 2008, Will Morgan kindly showed me the last whip David made. (Will kept it for himself). Perhaps Will remembers the exact date it was made.

This thread has turned into an interesting talk, and since one of my whips is discussed, I decided to chime in. The bullwhip I made for Paul, that now belongs to Mike, is moderately heavy, and was made trying to match the weight of the Morgans made around 2000. I followed the dimensions and proporti...

I have discussed this subject at length with David Morgan himself many times. One little detail to bear in mind is that when the embargo took place, DM had a good stock of kangaroo hides. Thank you Graeme! I am familiar with Simon's roo skins. I had the opportunity to try them out when I was visiting my good friend Paul Nolan. He likes them a lot. I experimented with them a bit, "hand stuffing" them, and they turned darker, but always a different shade of brown than the ski...

No worries Graeme! I was just clarifying that info so as to avoid confusion
Btw, since the kangaroo skins you use darken in a similar shade of brown to your kip hides, I take those aren't from Packer. May I ask where you get your roo hides?
Cheers,

Great post Daren! My view on the subject is as follows: all vegetable-tanned leathers will darken with exposure to sunlight. The shade of brown they turn into will depend on the type of bark used in the tanning process, and if the hides have been drum-stuffed, a process that darkens the leather. Dif...

Hi Doran, You will get straight seams when your hands do the same motions on each side. When you plait, one hand holds the braid and the other pulls the working strand. Then you change hands and reverse roles. That's the problem, as normally one hand will do things slightly different from the other....

Hi Tomek, good guess! The diameter of the thong in the Murphy is 18mm, and 29mm(a little over 1" 1/8) in the Jacka. The heel knot on the Murphy is extremely small. That whip is better held by the handle. On the other hand, the heel knot on the Jacka is quite big. As Indiana County Jr. said, it ...

It seems that David started making his "short" handled whips sooner than 2001, as my first Morgan was made in July/August 2000 and it has that shorter distance between the knots. It is worth mentioning that I did not request anything, other than specifying the length (8ft). It looks nearly...
