Re: Gibson & Barnes Expedition: Was This a Good Buy?
I figured that y'all would not mind, but I still wanted to ask. You know what they say about assuming things. 5Star has a variety of skins that I think could look really good in the pattern. Their "visky" horsehide would make for an interesting looking Indy jacket, as would any of their bu...

Wow, that's really cool. I don’t think I realized just how closely the community worked with Dave and G&B. As I mentioned, I love the jacket. The fit is fantastic, the color is great, and the goatskin is the best I’ve ever handled. I can really feel the quality. The milspec build—something that ...

Thank you all for the kind words about the fit! Honestly, I really love it and it may be my favorite jacket to date. I can layer under it comfortably, which will make for a nicer wear in the winter for sure. I can layer both of my S&J jackets (DoD in Thin Horse & ToD in Blackstone Cow) under...

Double reply to say: I’ve never seen goat be so receptive to conditioner. I used some Leather CPR (similar to Bick 4) on it and it SOAKED in. For how little this thing seems to have been worn, it was apparently very dry. Is this common with the G&B goat? Also, is there any way to determine age?

Any G&B Expo acquisition is a great buy, depending on how much you paid. Congratulations! You need to determine if it is an off the rack or made to measure. They sold both versions. The ‘T’ had a longer body than the standard by about 2” or so. Regards! Michaelson Interesting, the seller really...

Today I bought a 44T Expedition on eBay… there were only two pictures on the listing. I asked the seller for a few more and they sent a few more. I have no clue about the hide, the lining does look really good, and I’m excited to get my hands on it after reading nothing but great things about G&...

Re: Sewing in a Smaller Sweatband?
The Fedora Lounge suggested a complete reblock since there’d be too much space to “take up”. Interestingly, the user replying to me said that something like what Indiana Jeff had done would be too much of a shortcut. I think what I’ll do is order a sweatband, cut and sew it to size, and then see how...

Re: Sewing in a Smaller Sweatband?
Well the other question is... did you pull the reed? As far as I can remember, Brian uses reeded sweatbands. I know mine from way back when has a reed. That little piece of wire can definitely keep the dimensions of the sweat while it dries or at least keep the shrinkage to a minimum. I’ve never at...

Re: Sewing in a Smaller Sweatband?
Alas, still no luck. Tried again last night and it didn’t do much. I think I’ll try not only a smaller sweatband, but one that’s a slightly thicker leather as well. Etsy has some veg tan cowhide sweats… in theory those should shrink/stretch/conform better than soft chrome tan sheepskin. I may also m...

how bright are the bulbs and you're sure its not an LED lamp? It may be that bulbs back (in the old days) when we did all this were WAY more inefficient and generated a ton more heat. Interestingly, I tried the lamp trick last night and had no luck. I don’t know if the incandescent bulbs I got are too weak, the lampshades are insulating it too much, if the lamps I have are underpowered, or if the sweatband has shrunk as much as it will already? Who knows. I followed general guide...

Re: Sewing in a Smaller Sweatband?
Sewing in a new band for that small of a difference is not worth it in my book. I’d go to the lampshade trick … It’s low enough heat to shrink the band very slowly and you pull it off when you get to where you want it. I’ve tried wetting it and leaving it my truck on a hot day, but that didn’t do m...

So, I have wondered recently which companies use chrome-tanned leather or veg-tanned leather and which use both depending on the skin chosen? I have had a lot of luck using Angelus dye on my boots and other leather goods recently. I haven’t had a chance to try it on a jacket, but the Army Tan color is a nice red/orange-ish brown, and can produce really nice copper tones that some of the people around here like.

The leather really is great! As for length, mine fits wonderfully. I wear a 44L in blazers and my BK Relic Hunter, and my USW is a regular large! It’s great as long as I don’t extend my arms a lot, the lack of gussets make the sleeves look short if I reach too far.
