You should use 550. Not only is it cheaper, its also smaller by a good bit. Smaller, and thinner. Since its thinner, it'll lay flatter. Its just better all around. My input.

650 paracord is wider?

It also depends an who produces the paracord, I have seen some 650 that is the same size as 550 but have also seen 650 that is a little bigger than 550. The main difference though is the center core strands.
I've never used 650 (mainly because I'm cheap), but, have noticed size variances between different batches or colors of 550 all purchased from the same vendor.
It has never been by much, but, I can always tell the difference when loading the BB cores.
