Pouncing an Akubra Fed IV Standard?

Post by laughograms »

Hello all,
A quick question: I love my Fed IV but it is a teeny bit. . . fuzzier than I might like. So I am debating pouncing it down a little with some superfine sandpaper. Any advice/warnings/experience in doing this? (Including "don't do it, are you nuts?!?")

Yeah, don't use a power sander. Seriously, I think if you use a 1200 grit sandpaper (if I recall correctly) and sand in circles by hand, you should be okay. Just take it easy and do a little at a time. It's a "feel" kind of thing. The fuzziness is due to the rabbit hairs sticking up, so the sanding should take that down for you.

Keep in mind that the Feds are 100% rabbit.
And honestly, going much beyond 600 grit on the sand paper will yield no better results.

Try brushing the hat first. It may solve the probelm for you.
There is a "light it on fire" method that some use, but I will let you search the forums for that one. I'm not sure Im'm ready to recommend it.

I have two regular fed IV's and I felt similarly when I first got them. I've found that as I wear them and occasionally clean them with a slightly damp wash cloth counter-clockwise top and clockwise on bottom they both seem smoother. Don't know if thats the expert way to clean them but its worked.

you can pounce the fed 4 but I would be careful going higher than 600 grit. You can make the color of the hat uneven.

I do offer a re-block service and a pouncing service.
