I'm lucky enough to have a set of really good close-enoughs I've worn since 1990. Try finding a simple round pair of glasses now!!!!!
I spent a small fortune on Ebay for vintage Serengeti drivers to match, since I love the pattern and have gone through 2 sets.
For some reason, NOBODY sells round glasses or sunglasses anymore! What the heck is that all about? Drives me nuts....Even the close-enoughs you're linking to are the 'flattened oval' I see everywhere...I look like CR@P in those....And you're lucky even to find them....
You need to start hitting the antique stores, folks. I've purchased and been wearing NOS round gold filled 1930's frames for years, and found them anywhere from $6 to $10 a pair.
Sometimes you have to get out from behind a PC and hit the streets to find this stuff!
That's my point....Simple, round frames simply aren't available anymore unless you want to go to Ebay or Antiquing....NOBODY is making them new, for some unknown reason. I know there's a certain 'fashion trend' involved, but you aren't going to tell me that simple, rounded shapes have fallen that far out of style....It's the shape of the human eye, fer chrissake!!!!
I shouldn't HAVE to search for a basic round shape....That's my take.
Like I said, I haven't paid much attention to what anyone is currently making, and haven't for years. I get my stock while on my adventures in the dusty shelves of old store inventory, and let those squinting through those narrow 'fashion' glasses try to be trendy.
I guess what really amuses me is every one of those new glasses look alike to me, and yet I see commercial after commercial trying to convince me that I can make an individual fashion statement by upgrading to new frames. Why? They make everyone look the same!!!!
I've got SO many complements on my old round Serengetis. Why? A. They suit me! B. Nobody makes 'round' anymore! And it's not like they're vintage...They only stopped making them in 2000....It's sad, really....
I'm sure i'm not alone in saying again that I look like a doofus in all these new 'squashed' styles. Guess i'll keep browsing and picking up spares for the next time I step on my shades out in the desert.....
I'll have to post pix of my close-enough glasses and shades, just so everyone can remember what 'round' looks like...
Great frames. I just ordered the Beauforts yesterday (on backorder until 18
April). I tried purchasing them locally in an eyeglass shop, but as PyramidBlaster said, everything is square now. When I asked to see rounder frames every salesperson said that square is the style.
What ever happened to the customer is always right? These days it's simply 'this is what we've got, buy 'em or get lost'. Irritating if you ask me.
I got lucky over the summer, and found a pair of Polo frames on eBay that are nearly spot on with Indy's Berkshire Chases. I think they were around $60.
My wife doesn't really like them because round isn't in style right now, but it's just a matter of time before it's in again.
