Inspired by the opening of Last Crusade I went looking for a campaign hat. There's many out there to choose from, but mainly in wool. I came across this one via auction. Vintage 1971 (the year of my birth so I guess that makes me vintage issue), pristine condition, beaver fur felt and in the original box with order form and plastic rain cover. It even has the optional leather hat band and a Boy Scouts pin. The sweatband, hat band and chin/head strap were in desperate need of leather conditioning, but after a good treatment I've got myself an awesome addition to my Cub Scouts uniform!
Yeah, you can't TOUCH a hat that nice for that price these days! That is a VERY NICE color and would make a beautiful fedora in that green. And the fact you got a Boy Scout pin to go with it makes it even more of a deal. I would imagine one of those pins would cost about $10 at the lower end of the range so that makes your hat about $80 dollars without it. Nope, definitely a super find at an even more super price.
Thanks. It is definitely worth the money spent for the hat alone and given that it came with a pin and the optional leather hat band, even more of a value.
Wool hats I found were in the $50 range and other new campaign hats in 'fur felt' were in the $120-150 range and I assume the fur would be rabbit.
I did have to laugh, when it first came I was showing it to my Bride and when she saw "beaver fur" embossed on the hatband she said, "Wow, beaver, that's be best kind of felt for a hat." I guess she is paying attention.
I posted these in the PB thread, but that was to show the work they did adding a liner and replacing the sweatband. http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?f ... gn#p852144" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'll look through pictures from last spring's Court of Honor to see if there are any there worth posting.
Oddly enough, after reading this thread, I've stumbled across half a dozen of these in antique stores here in Tennessee, all in restorable condition......just too small for MY head.
